Gear-Box Remap . . . E53 218 Diesel 2004
I read in an old posting that there are remaps for these 6spd auto boxes,
Is this different to resetting the box to manufactured settings that I understand we can do with a key position / throttle press & timing sequence ?
What does the remap achieve, what improves ?
**My X5 hangs around at high revs before it gets round to changing up a gear on acceleration - always has...
Is there a cure for this ? - polite answers please lol

There are various different firmware updates that have been released as time progressed with the series.
A BMW dealer can do it (for an obscene price no doubt) as can a suitably equipped specialist. Mine was last done by a Bosch Autocentre who had the 'Autologic' system and just uploaded the revised firmware. Mine changed at around 2k rpm most of the time unless in 'sport' when it would hold the rpm to the red line. A cold gearbox will also run in 'cold' mode which does hold the rpm longer. If you only do short journeys then it may not fully warm up, but on longer journeys it will go into 'warm' mode and change earlier.
The key & throttle option just resets the 'adaptions' that the gearbox makes as it learns your driving style. It might ve worth a try (it's free after all) and then have the firmware updated if that doesn't help.

Many thanks Richard,
how much did the Bosch Autocentre charge you to plug your car in to upload the firmware ?

Pass. It was done after my gearbox rebuild and included telling the brand new Mechatronics Unit what gearbox & model of car it was attached to. Rebuilder paid for it - well Warranty Direct at least.
