Useless running boards

Hello all,
The first thing that struck me after owning a car for a few days is how the running boards are completely useless. Alright, not completely useless, they get in the way when getting out, so at least you are aware of them.
Obviously the aesthetic appeal is their only purpose (for those who fancy them), as they are positioned too high to be useful when getting in, and just get in your way when getting out. Am I the only one who feels this way?

It is not just you, that is exactly what I am talking about. That seems to be their only purpose.

I like mine, am used to avoiding them from brushing against trouser legs. They are also useful for standing on when packing a roof box or cleaning the roof as I am quite short! Added to which I think the car would just look wrong without them.

Seems that most of the replies agree that what they do is look good.
Actually I mentioned it because before getting an X5 I was driving an GMC Envoy (completely...."unremarkable" vehicle, so to say), and I couldn't help noticing that running boards on that thing served their purpose nicely, it felt natural to step on them while getting in or out. On a X5 they are mostly in the way, rather than being the way themselves.

Yes. I rarely wear a suit.
