So I have a facelift E53 (built 07/04) and am looking to replace the transfer case fluid at the weekend.  I'm finding conflicting information.  A few posts on this forum say things like:

Transfer case on X5 facelift that have Xdrive requires  special oil:

GENUINE BMW Transfer Case Fluid - Shell TF-0870 (1 Liter) 83220397244

However the part number I find on Real OEM is 83229407858 and this is also what the dealer parts counter said.  When I search for the part number 83220397244 it only shows up for the E70 but not the E53.

Does anyone know what information is correct?

I just had mine replaced. I went to BMW and ordered the right oil/fluid. part number of the invoice is B83.22.9.407.858 it is only £10 you will need a 1ltr, differential oil is Castrol SAF-XO  B33.11.7.695.240.

I hate to regurgitate an old thread, but I've been investigating this and my understanding is that facelift models (the ones with xdrive) should use 83220397244, which is Shell TF-0870 Transfer Case Fluid.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't want someone to read the previous post and fill with incorrect fluid.

All xdrive cars from 2004 till now.

I queried the part number and models on the bottle with my dealer for my E83. The same fluid is now used for all models

Realy? My car is just in the shop, and for transfercase fluid they ask 48€.. Pft Estonia..  )
