Synthetic ATF

The E53 chaps have some, but I don't see a thread here (E70) about running synthetic ATF in our gearboxes. I routinely switch my cars over to synthetic ATF at the first service interval.  Typically it's Redline, but I've used others too.

Is the factory ATF in an E70 already synthetic? In that case I'd just stick with it.

If I go to a 3rd-party ATF, what specification must it meet?

Thanks for any answers you may have,

Reno

Have a look at the ZF website, that might give you a clue.

Personally I only use the manufacturer's specific fluid.  Especially as mine is still under a BMW warranty.

So it's a ZF box? That's a good start, thanks. I also posted a query on a German X5 forum and will cross-post any good answer I get there.
