Hi

I have a 2001 BMW X5/E53 3.0 petrol. When i bought it 2 weeks ago in had in it a mostly knackered pioneer unit with a (broken) fold out screen and a parrot.

I have since got myself a Dynavin D99 and have had a go at doing it myself....

The main connector fits and the unit powers up, plays music, links to my phone etc but there are a few problems:

1. The plastic frame in my dash is the wrong size and shape to take the unit, and it doesnt seem to come out....
2. Where is the radio antenna? the radio worked on the old unit so im assuming its linked to one of them millions of wires O_o
3. I have rear screens (not sure if they work) but dont know where the wires lead or what the ends would even look like, any ideas?
4. A lot of functions (CD/DVD) say that function is not available while vehicle is in motion.... vehicle was stopped, im assumine something to do with the wire marked "brake"
5. The sat nav on the dynavin (Tom Tom) is ina  funny language and i cant find how to change it...

Hopefully i can (with you help) fir it myself and save installation costs of £50 per hour!!! O_O

Antennas are on the near side rear quarter window and use an amplifier/diversity system.  The original radio unit would probably have been in the boot if you have Nav fitted - a BM24 I think was the type at that point in production but it might be a BM54.

Depending upon the screen type fitted, the 'usual' way to run the screen wires is down inside the back seat and under the carpets to whatever player was used.  That might have been in the left side boot cubby?  You may be able to find the power and video cables where they come out of the seats.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I had the Dynavin unit in my X5 ( now sold ) I had the single slot CD business  radio in mine, not the sat nav when I bought mine. I had to hack out the dash as the CD and MID unit, multi information device, I got the wiring loom adapter and an areal connection adapter which altered the Fakra OEM connection to Din connection standard areal jack plug. It was all plug and play.
If your X5 was fitted with sat nav as standard the BM54 radio module will be in the boot, under the spare wheel I think. You will then need the 5 mtr long Facra cable to run from the radio module in the boot to the headunit.
As far as the DVD in motion is concerned you have to choose the option in the settings menu to enable video in motion.
This is funny to gain access to as I think its via settings then tooch the top right or left of the screen to put you into that menu. ( my memory is not what it was )
Tom Tom on win CE is a pain in the butt, I had Sygic or some thing that came with it on SD card, but got a copy of IGO 8 primo off EBay, which is far better and is written for Win CE6.
So see if you can find which lead goes to the radio unit, if you have a Facra cable you may need to get an adapter, the Facra areal lead ends are usually a light blue plastic plug

Thanks for the advice. There are so many different wires, and only a few of them are labeled I dont know whats from factory unit, whats from old broken unit, whats from the parrot with the broken unit or what O_o

These two connectors were the only 2 plugged into the pioneer (broken) poppy outy screen and the radio worked (although the parrot was somehow plugged in too...)

tomorrow I'll have a play with the rear screens, see if i can trace the wires (just one thickish black wire coming off of each)

Still not sussed out the sat nav app.... speaking of apps, how/where do i download more? does the unit itself have to be connected to the internet (a bit of a pain if this is the case) or can i go to where ever, download an app (hopefully for free...) on my computer, save onto sd card and stick it into the Dynavin (i bet it isnt this simple...)
what other apps could i get for it?

This is a Fakra to din adapter the OEM aerial on BMW are Fakra, Dynavin usually have a female din short lead sticking out of the back. Mine did.
Was your X5 fitted with sat nav from new, or a single CD Mid unit.????? If satnav you need a lead to go to the radio unit in the boot, if business CD  MIDthe OEM areal is behind the headunit/ radio

The output leads are all RCA? Video outlet, audio out camera in, the parrot will have an ISO lead plugged into the original quadlock. This can be removed as won't be needed. The loom that comes with the Dynavin should then be plugged straigt into the quadlock. If the car a satnav car all the bits are in the boot under the spare wheel and compressor bM 54 unit. Where are you located, a clued up member may be near to you to lend a hand.

No idea what was fitted from new.....

Where is the first picture taken?  It certainly looks like radio aerial connectors, although I'm not certain for what as they look too good a quality for just broadcast.

The other pictures are behind the dash, or in the boot?  In either case it's the same connector.  That all looks like the 'Quadlock' connector which would have fitted the OEM radio unit.  They all go on as a single connector on the amp (in the boot) or head (in the dash).  Some are speaker wires, others power and control.

The last photo shows the quadlock between your fingers, is this  the OEM quadlock.? Some of the connectors on the pics look like the parrot loom. Did the Dynavin come with a loom with a quadlock on the end, also there should be a canbus box attached to it too.if the unit powers up and the bluetooth works, does the steering wheel buttons work. Is there a plastic bar preventing the unit fitting into the dash. Photo of the dash / headunit entry please.

The photo i took of what appears to be the aerial is in the boot, left side compartmen tucked right away towards the front of the car.

The Dynavin comes with a cable that fits the quadlock. There is a black box attached (i wondered what it was) also has a few other wires, ill take a pic of them in a minute.

Never tried steering wheel controls...

I have a pic of the frame in the dash (took the other day trying to identify parrot)

Now with the dynavin in its housing with brackets attached, its far too wide.. With just housing (ie brackets removed) it still doesnt fit in the hole! No housing (so just the unit) it loosly fits in the hole but is too low down O_o am i gonna have to get a hacksaw/dremel to cut the frame away, then some how bodge the unit it?

So there appears to be no aerial in the dash, so how did my pioneer/parrot setup manage to find radio stations just fine? (A different type of aerial perhaps?)

The blue Fakra aerial adapter is in your hand, you need a Fakra to din adapter to convert from the OEM Fakra to your Din aeral lead on the headunit.
Your dash was the same as mine, non sat nav version, consisting of a MID and a single slot CD unit which also has all the radio module enclosed.
You have to cut out the plastic bar that's runs across the opening, also unscrew the wood affect flap that covered the CD player so you are left with an opening that the Dynavin will fit into. Mine came with a bracket that was meant to fit the E39 5 series I had to alter this to hold the headunit in place, but you may be able to fabricate something to secure it or just drop it in and see how solid it sits in the dash.
I've still got the quadlock adapter for the pre facelift X5 as mine came with both loom adapters as the pre and facelift cars had different quad locks.
The other wires are
Blue: Amp Con
Pink:  parking
Green: reverse
Alter the Brake setting in setup to allow DVD on the move, so you don't need to connect the handbrake wire.
The black box on the loom is the canbus interface to allow PDC and steering wheel buttons to work
Try first to see if it all works before you cut out the plastic dash bar, as there's no turning back to standard once cut out. I used a hacksaw blade removed from my hacksaw with tape wrapped around it.

There should also be a seperate loom that has a number of RCA jack plugs on it to run rear screens audio in and out, ALS iPod and USB connectors
I've got a lead here but not sure if it is for the Dynavin with the RCA plugs on. Email me for a photo if needed to check if its the right one if yours is missing.
