Runflats removed - cracked wheel - toyos fitted

Post by POC » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:45 pm

I decided I'd had enough of the sh1tty ride on the runflats on the 20in wheels, that and I was concerned that they may crack the rims (roads round here are awful).  Car is a 2008 3.0sd msport.

So I bought a set of Toyo T1 Sport, dropped the car in to have them fitted yesterday on the way to work.  The phone rang a couple of hours later, yup, one of the rear wheels has a crack. Typical lol.

Managed to source a replacement wheel after a few calls, had it couriered to the fitters and they finished the car up today.

Cant comment on the ride yet as I've not driven it (was delivered back home), will report back later!!

Check your wheels guys!!

Cheers, Paul

Which toyos, size and price did you go with?

Have you gone toyo non run flat allround?

Hi, the crack was on the inside edge of one of the rear wheels, all the way through the inner rim!  Just a hairline but bad enough.

I went for the Toyo T1 sport SUV, 315/35/20 on the back and 275/40/20 on the front, cost £650 fitted for all 4, which I thought was pretty good value.

Yes they are non-runflat, that was the whole idea behind changing them.

Little update:  drove the car this evening, the ride is much smoother, lower road noise.

Money well spent I'd say!

I wasn't expecting a 'transformation' as such, just an improvement, which is what I got.

To me the ride on runflats ruined the car, far too crashy and harsh.

the tyres are so big, is it noticeable?

It was noticeable on my 5 series from 18" run flats to 19" non run flats and even better on 17" non run flats, but the 18 - to - 19 was lower profile too

Yup very noticeable!  I drove 150 miles today, was like a different car.  Much lower road noise, much smoother overall ride.

I keep reading about BMW star marked approved tyres. I'm assuming the Toyos arent marked?

I also read about how non approved tyres can cause transmission damage, is there anything in this or is it just a way of overpriced approved tyres being sold?

I'm planning to ditch the RFs as well, I used Toyo on my E53, seemed ok to me.

It has been reported in the E53 and E70.  It mostly seems to happen when there is a wide variation in tread depth front/rear as that can wind up the transfer box.  The transmission seems to be a little 'sensitive' if the mismatch goes outside the tolerance limits.

I think only those manufacturers 'approved' by BMW have '*' markings as they have subtle differences in the make up of the tyres to suit the BMW itself.  Other car manufacturers are the same.  There are markings for Audi, Mercedes and others.  Realistically you are probable looking at Continental, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin, Dunlop 'premium' tyres to have a big enough market to warrant making car specific tyres as they are the ones fitted by the factories.

Issues don't happen to everyone and I have not seen a concensus anywhere that points to any particular brand of tyres being more likely to cause trouble.  Plenty of owners used the old generation Toyo Proxies with no trouble but I think they have now been replaced by a new version.
