Auto Box Malfunction ??

Post by Patriot1368 » Tue Sep 09, 2014 1:48 am

Hello, and before I start I must compliment one & All on an amazing, helpful, Very useful and Informative Members site for our Beautiful and Engaging Automobiles........I Love these vehicles :)  (first BMW in nearly thirty yrs Driving)  :(

My only issue I have after nearly a months ownership of an X5 E70 2008 my, 3.0 sd sport (twin turbo) 67,500 miles, is that once in a while whilst moving off it seems to slip/hesitate for couple of seconds then GO ! Only happened 2-3 times, but it feels like a definite slip of transmission/ hesitation from  standstill  ??

Whilst in motion, driven hard or gently it appears fine, with no issues at all :)  just this brief stutter......then Oooooooomph away we go  :)  Vehicle has an exemplary service history from main dealers, also.

Any Advice/Pointers,given, will be very much appreciated. Just this silly little minor point, putting a slight downer on my enjoyment of this Beautiful Auto. Many thanks Ladies and Gentlemen. Thank You for your time. Yours in anticipation, Chris  :)

Cold engine?  If so try using Sport to make the box use 1st to pull away instead of 2nd.
Is this normal on an X5 or just the sd?, in our 3.0d  I usually pull away and count 5 gear changes as it goes from 1st all the way to 6th.
My mates 530d did pull away in 2nd unless you put it in manual mode.

Depends upon the box and amount of 'load'.  My X5 with a cold engine tended to pull away in 2nd on a level road, but 1st if more power demanded such as a hill.  How it chose I don't know.

My X6 only seems to use 1st in Sport with a cold engine which can be a pain if nipping across the A1 as I have to remember to use it in order to avoid the pick up lag.
I am guessing you have the 8 speed box?, my 57 plate 3.0d  has the 6 speed box.
We have had the car nearly a year and I don't think it has ever pulled away in second.

Yes, 8 speed.  Sorry should have made it clearer.  My X5 was a 6-sp E53 3.0D.  You have the 2nd gen 6-spd which does things differently I think.  Might have been to reduce the numbers breaking - the 1st gen one has a bad rep for that!

Hi Chris

I experienced the same issue in my 8spd e70 and reset the gearbox using the procedure below which helped a lot. I still have a slight delay, less in sport mode. Worth a go if you haven't sorted the issue already.

Over time the ECU in the trans learns your driving style and that is what it keeps in memory. The throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts and personalizes to your particular driving style. However, there is a way to set the ECU back to factory default. I have done this with my 07 328 and it works fine. I've done this with several Mercedes. The only difference with a push button to start/stop engine system is that you must use the start button instead of turning the key to it's first position and again to simulate the off position.
DO NOT REMOVE THE KEY DURING THIS PROCEDURE
Here it is; How to do a TBA: Throttle Body Adaptation reset.
Resetting the Adaptive Driver Memory for the transmission.

Works with any car that has Driver Adaptive Electronic Controlled Transmission.

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.
2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position, the position just before the starter turns over. BMW: press start button – foot off brake - all idiot lights on.
3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position. BMW: All idiot lights on.
4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off position". BMW: foot off brake press start button - all idiot lights now off (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
5. Wait a full 2 minutes for a full electronic alignment. Don't remove the key.
6. Start engine, drive the car, notice the difference.

Is the "slip" only when the car is started from cold? This along with the decreasing temperatures with the weather maybe having an effect until the car is up to temperature?
