Stratstones bmw alloy and tyre insurance

Post by mark hamster 28 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 11:33 am

Morning all. Just reading another post about run flats and thought I would start one about an insurance I have bought from Stratstones when I purchased my 2nd hand bmw approved X5 a few months back.
Firstly has anyone else purchased the above ? I just cannot believe it will pay out upto 5 times for new tyres in the 3 years I have took the plan out for.! obviously if you get a puncture with these run flats, then the tyre is a throw away straight away but told they will replace them ?? Mine set up also so I can claim for the rear BIG tyres which cost well in the £300's of pounds.!! Also can claim upto 10 times to get the alloys refurbished if and when wallop the kurb.!

Just seems all too good to be true.. O:-) O:-) Please anyone else had or got this ? would love to hear how you have got on with it, cheers all for reading, Mark

I had tyre insurance 'thrown in' when I bought my X6.  I never had to use it because the only time I ever had a puncture it was fixed.  Dealers will tell you the RFT has to be thrown away but that's not always the case.

If the damage is minor and it's not close to the sidewall and you haven't driven too far on it then it's fixable.

I don't remember anything about kerbing repairs, but then the policy has already run out and I had not (then) suffered an outbreak of kerb rash.

I have a very similar insurance with Premia Solutions that BMW threw in with the X5 - 10 alloy wheel repairs in 3 years (have used up 3 of these in these thanks to Mrs C, but we won't go there  >:D), along with 5 replacement tyres.

A word of warning wrt the kerbed wheel repairs though: report it as soon as it happens, as I have read mostly bad reviews of this type of insurance mainly because people wait until they've kerbed the same wheel a few times before claiming, and when the insurance company checks the pictures, they refuse the claim unsurprisingly. Not had to claim on the tyre part of the insurance yet, although I've a funny feeling I may get nail through one or two of them when I'm at about 2.5 mm tread... O:-)

Dr C, when took the policy out, to be fair was told you have to report it on the day or in 24 hrs.! Not happened yet but the tyres do seem to stick out a fair bit, so its going to have to hit kurb quite hard to damage I'm guessing. On my RRS it had 22" alloys on and within 3 months all 4 alloys were kurbed.! Only realised it had wrong tyres after joining a forum and needed to be wider but they lasted until I sold it and gave the buyer money off to get it all done.

And yes I was wondering about a maybe a suspect puncture to test policy out  ;) ;) sales guy said don't do all 4 in one go  :D

Also really surprised to hear you can mend punctures on run flats ? Seen some photo's on here off run flat tyres which have had punctures mended and the tyres looked really bad on the inside and apparently they were dangerous.!

Took out tyre insurance with Motorway direct when i got the X - Cost £300.  In the first year I had 4 new tyres from it as there was a lot of building going on in the area and kept getting screws and stuff stuck in the tyres.  From then onwards its been probably 1 or 2 a year.

Runs out in October this year and if i can i will be renewing it.
