BMW delete Run Flats Please !

Why do BMW insist on still offering run flats on their cars?  I have had them on the last 3  X5s, all on 20 " rims. Run Flats are shocking tyres  , for Cost  Wear and Ride reasons, and hit a small pot hole in a car with  them and your lucky if your rim doesn't crack as many owners have found out the last few years including myself.  >:(
Why don't  X5/ X 6 s  just come  with a "Get me home 155 mm tyre"  rim stored under the boot floor ?
.( 7 seat  variants of X 5  you have no choice , dont have so many kids !! )
I found that my run flat went down in seconds and i couldn't drive it home  anyway without damaging the rim which would have added another £ 420  to my bill for a tyre which couldnt be repaired !!!
Ban run flat  tyres campaign starts here now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any moan number two is why dont run flats have a rim protector rubber edge to prevent kurbing those beautiful 20 " rims on 35  profile  sidewalls that  just kiss  kerbs so easily , we've all done it !!! , just a  5mm  rubber  edge protruding past the aluminium rim  would  make such a difference especially when i loan the car to my girlfriend !!! !  sorry Joanna  , but it always causes a family row  !!XXX

I have had my X5 now for about 3 months on 20"rims and has 4 brand new run flats on.! now I no i have the m sport model so I expect it to be a bit hard but I must admit I would love to have non run flats on just to see how much difference it makes ?? most folk seem to say they are a little hard. I use to have a range rover sport and must admit it wasn't as bumpy and still handled well round the bends as it use to pump the suspension up to keep it level but obviously they are the king of the 4 X 4's and as much I wanted another, I much prefer the running costs of my X5.! Also going to start a new post about Stratstones alloy and tyre insurance which I have taken out for 3 years, please read and comment, thanks.

I like the ride on my RFT shod X6.  Maybe the fact there is no air suspension on the car makes a difference.  Self levelling susp is a cost option unless the 3.5T towing limit is specced.  Most X6s I'm told don't have it.

What I don't like is the tyre wear which seems to be much higher than on my X5, but then I'm comparing Michelin with Dunlop and the last time I used Dunlop (1990's) they wore faster on that car too.

>:(  The  million dollar  question is how  much is the Tyre and Wheel  Insurance, and  can i  take it out retrospectively, now that i have owned the car  two years plus, or only at the point  of  BMW  AUC  purchase ?
Anyone  used  315/20 "on rear with  Pirelli  or similar instead of  the BMW  original equipment RFT S at first tyre change ?
I  will need to change all  tyres on my  M Sport 4D  before this winter arrives  and i desperately want to ditch all 4 RFTs.  Anyone used  or swapped to good  alternative options  .?  I have  275/40/20 on the front 315/35/20 on the rear , standard on the 4 D  M Sport i presume.

My policy cost me £450. Did chip them down from £500. I bought mine within 28 days off  buying car.! Seem to think after 28 days could not then buy from Stratstones. I said no when offered the policy when picking my car up but when I went away and thought about it, I realised it will only take 1 new tyre and a alloy wheel repair to get money back  O:-) O:-)

Turned down the insurance when I got my X6 as I had not had a puncture for years. Sods law I had one a week later but £25 for a repair was all I spent on tyre repairs since then. I like the RFT on the X6, they were hell on the 335i and were changed straight away to standard tyres.

I would not want to jack up something the size of the X5/6 to change a wheel and would not trust tyre foam products to hold up that weight personally.

I think the ride on my x5 with runflats is good , better than my 911 and better than my Golf R (although that was on Bilstein coilovers ) - plus I like the idea of not having to change wheels by the roadside with a puncture !

Thinking about it, runflats might even save you or your families life !!!

I also here the temporary puncture repair sprays aren't all that good and make a nasty mess of your wheels !

Pretty sure ill stick with runflats .

I had wheel and tyre insurance on the DB9.  Paid for itself with one replacement tyre after about 3 months!
