Stone chips on sills & rear arch extensions

Hi there,

Just washed my msport tonight, it's white with the 20" wheels & mudflaps all round, there are defiantly stone chips starting to show on the sill & arch extensions just like the e70 did prior to them all getting the clear plastic fitted at the factory, mines not even done 6k yet, anyone else having the same issues?

Well  i'm on my 3rd    X5, over the last 6 years (all  M sport  with  20" (315mm  rear  run flats)  , and  every one  had to have rear arches painted after approximately 15,000 miles, my present 4D  now with  19,000 miles has two rear arches  with an orange peel stone chip effect on my nice white M Sport !  "Chips Away" will be getting another call out soon !  oh and my alloys seem to be oxidising and the lacquer blistering which started at 10,000 miles  so they will need a re varnish !  Not kerbed them yet ,but the lacquer  is blistering on the hub section and rims!

Not had any alloy issues yet but if they start like the e70 did then it will be paintwork & new wheels under warranty again, have you been into your dealer yet?

BMW had that issue on the last X5 and had to start supplying special film for the rear arches and doors on cars with 20" wheels!!  Hard to believe they've gone and screwed up again!  I thought testing would have found that little issue long ago?  But then again.... Does the rest of the world not use 20" wheels?  Or is it that UK roads are so bad now?

M13LKY et al., is the "orange peel effect" that damian777 mentions actually stone chips? I too have an F15 in white with 20" wheels (no issues with the wheels themselves, I'm on 20" 468M), and every time I wash the car I scrub the sills/arches like mad trying to get the "orange peel" off (I've done 12,500 miles). What an idiot, I thought it was just really badly ingrained dirt and was hoping a good detailing/clay bar application would get rid of it!!!

I don't suppose BMW will entertain this being done under warranty? If not will Chipsaway really be able to fix it?

Sorry for all the daft questions... :-[

Dr C I have friends in the trade with a dealership they are going to machine polish my sills etc but we are all sure these areas are chips, my father in law had a white pre lci e70 which was kept immaculate apart from these areas but my lci model which had the plastic protector tape fitted had no problems, the thing that worries me is even with the bmw mudflaps fitted to mine I am still getting them, bmw did eventually do the paintwork under warranty on the e70 models that were affected so I think they will have similar claims with the F15, I am not local to my supplying dealer but if you are it's maybe worth taking it in sooner than later as on the last models they did the repairs then fitted the protective clear tape to stop it coming back.

Thanks M13LKY, appreciate it. I will see what the dealer says...I live in Edinburgh but work in Aberdeen and got the car at John Clark in Aberdeen. They've been OK so far but a mate of mine says the John Clark in Dundee is much better. I may also try Western in Edinburgh. Did you get yours from any of these dealers and if so was your warranty experience on the E70 good? Understand if you don't want to say...

Would be interested to hear what happens when you get yours machine polished? Also, any chance of pics? I will upload some when I get home tomorrow.

Cheers
Scott

Scott,

I got mine from knights down south, once I decide I'm changing it's all down to who gives me the best deal they were nearly £7k better value on discount & trade in compared to anyone else, my local dealer in dumfries is very good for service & I'll be going in to get the adblue done in a few months so will mention it to them then, I have no experience with the dealers mentioned but don't forget to tell them that I am having these same issues even with bmw mudflaps fitted which totally cover the outside edge of the tyre on the 20" wheels, I struggle to upload pics to this site but will try again at the weekend, I had no paint issues with my E70 as it was a lci model which had the protective film fitted from new & my in laws was a lease car so he never bothered doing anything about it, also do a search online about the chipping on the old model & have the link ready for when you visit the dealer as they listen a bit more when they realise you have done your homework! Great thing this internet!

Let me know how you get on.

I thought they would have addressed this too!  When it happened on my E70 M Sport they re sprayed it under warranty and then applied the protective film. Mine was a July 11 build and I think by the end of that year the film was being applied to all new cars
