I have suddenly developed a rattle when driving, i am certain it's not engine bay it sounds a lot like some heat shield or some thing, when I am parked up its gone, even on a high rev, but as soon as you pull away again it comes back, it's hard to ion down the area, anyone got any clue as to where I start looking?

X 5 Tailgates have a habit of rattling, particularly after a bit of wear and tear . The main dealer replaced the two gas tailgate struts under warranty on my last X 5 ,a few years ago and greased the lower latch mechanism which sorted the rear end rattle which was quite loud, sounded rather like an exhaust pipe hitting the floor pan. , a metallic clunk type noise , particularly on bumpy roads and with M Tech suspension which is quite hard it was a real irritating issue.
Good luck .

A little update, I was doing a slow drive with all the windows open trying to listen out for an area to pin point the sound. It was coming from the passenger side area for sure, it sounded a lot like a little ball rattling around in a tin. Whist doing this leaning across the seat trying to pinpoint it I managed hit a curb and damaged an alloy so that wasn't good. But completely deserved for not looking where I was going. (was my own farm road before anyone gets on my case). Shortly after that i went over a bump and the next thing the sound was gone and hasn't retuned???????.

Maybe a stone stuck on the engine under tray and the bump shifted it?

If you remove the undertray (a couple of bolts either side) you will probably find a load of Stones and bits fall out. I removed a good few kg's of stones! God knows where they came from....
