E70 Washer Jets

Post by Avtar » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:39 am

Came back to my car yesterday after some xmas shopping only to discover that both my front washer jets were gone, my first thought, who steals washer jets, and why would someone who could afford an E70 steal them. Went to BMW to order a new set and was told they they had seen a number of these over the past weeks with the cold snap.

Turns out the jets get wet, naturally, and then when they lower the water has frozen, pressure builds and then when you go to spray they fly off.................going to be done under warranty.

Yeah - seen other posts on this. Ask if the replacements have a better design to avoid you going back again!

I thought that the E70 has heated washer jets like the E53? In which case they should not fly off even if frozen as the wiring would act as a retention strap of sorts?

Not sure if te E71's are heated, but I'll have a look next time.

BTW. BMW GB have reportedly run out of screenwash. None of our local dealers can get any and stocks are either gone, or pretty close to gone. Obviously it only matters if you use theirs of course (I do at present and you can't mix it with other types as you get a gel forming with some).

Same thing has just happened to me this morning. Just noticed it in the car park , the drivers side jet was missing. I remember trying the jet but was frozen solid - 8 at the time. Now left with a big hole in the bumper. Glad to hear you are getting a repair under warranty.

Was talking to the dealer about this little issue this morning whilst looking at an X3 (very nice, but we'll await the 6-cyl diesel). He said that they have had a number of customers turning up demanding that BMW play fair as there is no warning in the handbook about potential freezing weather issues. BMW GB at least are not interested at all and saying it's not covered under the warranty and is a user error. I wonder how long they'll hold that position once the press gets proper wind of it.

To some extent I can see their point but if it's likely to cause an issue where freezing screenwash causes the component to actually come off the car then there should be a very clear warning in the Owners Handbook. I would question it under the 'fit for purpose' rules. How many of us actually know how good the screenwash protection against freezing we have in our cars really is?

If any of our members are affected, my suggestion would be to create merry hell and demand the replacement free of charge as the device is quite obviously not capable of working under all of te conditions it would be expected to.

At the dealership now having mine done. Have been told that they have been advised by BMW to test the concentration of the washer fluid when customers come with this is issue and if it is not at the right concentration (-12 degrees) then they will not cover it under warranty.

Mine are covered, no new design as they believe it is down to the concentration level of the fluid, basically one bottle to two parts water.
