Id have diesel every time if it was my car.

They drive better day to day driving, Tow better, and my 40d returns 25mpg, and 32 upwards on a run

Ive had lots of v8 4x4's and 13-15mpg is the normal knocking around, decent on a run upto 25 but thats being easy at 70mpg on cruise, 22 is more realistic

Resale will not be as good as a diesel either as 80% or more of people want diesel
if your planning on keeping it for years and years don't let it put you off resale should not come into the equation.

I think you are forgetting how it has eventually (!) come to light that diesels are worse for the atmosphere than petrol and because the dumb arse government set up taxes to be best on CO2s the dosey twats missed all the other pollutants diesels knock out and everybody bought diesels for cheap tax.

Now, as they are always behind, they have worked out that they were wrong after all!!!

Now they will be banning certain diesels from big cities and this will just get worse over time hence residuals of diesels will actually over time fall bringing petrol back in favour.

Things are definitely swinging back in the favour of petrol and hybrids.

Electric technology is still crap from what I see on other forums (see my sig) so electric cars will not be taking over the world yet.

Euro 6 solves that issue.  It's the Nitrogen Oxides that they missed and those are covered by the new emissions regs.

Earlier generation diesels Eu1-4 which are pre-DPF do cause a problem and those cars are gradually disappearing although that still leaves buses, taxi's, delivery vans and some older trucks from those generations to be taken off the road.  They are a bigger source in cities but nowhere else.

At least we went to low sulphur fuels years ago.....unlike some major economies.

It doesn't matter which fossil fuel us used, they are all bad, and the MOT checks on engines not tough enough to catch the bad ones - assuming they even have one in the first place.. >:(

Commercial vehicles (rightly) face far tougher checks, but I think cars and PLGs should face the same tough regime.

I still see far too many older cars pouring black diesel smoke and blue oil smoke driving around here seemingly  unchecked.

and what is the cut off for that date/model wise?

Goods vehicles are Sept 2013.

No, nor does mine which is EU5, but the F15 does which is why you also need Ad Blue now.  A lot of manufacturers already had EU6 models well before (OK a few months perhaps!) the date.

I expect that diesels will become much more expensive when the EU 7 spec is introduced due to the special cats and DPF and in line additive systems.  That and the fines that manufacturers get hit with for failing to meet the 2021 EU targets.

An interesting side effect is that as the petrol deand falls with each new EU emission spec, the price of diesel will rise.  Less demand for petrol means less refining in the EU so the fuel will have to be imported.

Hybrids are going to be the next 'big thing' for cars like the big AWD types and larger engined cars generally.  Petrol engines will need to meet 4.1L/100km and diesels 3.6L/100km.

Older diesels will drop in value significantly then!!
