Damn, that's no mileage at all for that age. But as above, time based intervals should have kicked in.

Yes, I snapped it up when I saw it. One owner, stupidly low mileage and BMW warranty. The colour combination and options weren't quite what I'd have chosen but I've bought a Garmin 3790t, which offers ok bluetooth connectivity and great satnav (voice control is brilliant) and I'll probably fit something to enable ipod/phone connectivity and I can live without heated seats. I'm in the process of valeting it (more like detailing really) and the interior is like new apart from the driver's seat. I figure that if I prepare it well at outset (the dealer prep left a lot to be desired) then it will be easy to keep clean going forward. The great thing is that we can drive it pretty much as much as we'd ever want to without it becoming a high mileage car.

If you have the new breather assembly you only need the breather itself and it can be bought direct from a bmw dealer.
As quoted by Bazzyboy in the op 'partno--filter assembly for breatherif have modded style housing------ 11127799366---£19+vat'

There was thoughts that if your car has the new breather design it won't suffer from the clogging up the old design does. It's made of solid plastic with no bits that can choke up, unlike the old foam design.

I'm gonna see, but might not look to replace it if it looks OK - hope mine has the old design though!

Job done! Kinda....

For ref I have a Feb 04 build and I had the OLD style breather! So glad I changed it. BMW system said it was new only - rubbish!

Quick drive seems to show no obvious improvements, but as long as I didn't get any errors I was happy!

I broke the bolt for the wiper arm assembly, described as the 'rubber buffer' so one coming tomorrow and then I can finish put it all back together. Bolt sheared clean off, so be careful if you do this changeover.

Pleased to report Jeegnesh made tea (twice), released a tight bolt and helped fit the air filter housing! He did have to wash his hands!

Many thanks to the posts from x555, X5Sport, bazzyboy and x man (and anyone else I've forgotten  )

You're most entirely welcome Glad it's sorted. One less worry :D

Got to do SWMBO's E46 version next, and that Is a challenge and a half looking at the info on the web. :?

The E71 air filter seems to be about a two minute job and I don't know if it even has a breather/separator/plastic thingy on top.

Thanks buddy,

Just can't believe how adamant BMW parts were that I had the NEW assembly/filter! Glad it was old and the new part was the improved version, so-to-speak.

Just not sure on any improvements though. I have the cold idle vibration - sometimes minimal, sometimes more pronounced...

I have NO IDEA what that is but a cold start may tell me if it was the filter and breather in the morning. Get the feeling it isn't as I think I felt vibration on start-up tonight when I tested the X.

Thinking possibly a vacuum pipe is worn - but no idea where to start looking, etc... Hate to think I have to let it get worse before finding the problem...

Welcome to ideas...

As for anyone else trying this, get the following so all bases are covered:

1. Decide if you want the BMW air filter or a K&N/Pipercross equivalent
2. Get the filter
3. The whole assembly (if you have the old type the new one won't fit)
4. The breather only (in case you have the new one and you can replace like for like and save £22)

Parts I ordered for a facelift E53

13712247444 Air Filter £30.95 (plus VAT)
11127799225 Breather Assembly £40.96 (pus VAT)
11127799366 Oil Seperator £19.46 (plus VAT)

Not me, I only assisted loosen though very tight bolts ;-)

Question - If you have a new assembly, is there any point in changing the Oil Seprator, because it looks like a piece of plastic?

Also planning on going for the Pipercross air filter (http://www.performance-filters.com/bmw- ... -632-p.asp) any reason not too?
