I'm chilling a bit now, all the X5's at dealers that I've seen have had poor repairs and are shocking at the price being asked and my first dip into the private market gets me a 'Victor Meldrew' character, what's with these cars ??

My last 2 cars have been the 'something better will come along' car after missing out on what I thought was the one!
So hang in there!

So, the old git from my earlier post ends up part exchanging because he's a miserable old sod that pee'd me off.
I then find it on the BMW AUC website a few weeks later for two and a bit grand more than he had it up for.
I've now ended up buying it for just over a grand more than he wanted private but with 4 brand new tyres fitted, the support of a main dealer, all the pre-sale checks and a full years warranty rather than 5 months. Also they are delivering 160 odd miles for free, so all in all it turned out nice and my patience paid off

Yeah, bit of luck really, OK so I paid a bit more but got far more benefits in return. The old boy said he'd carry on 'running it' if he couldn't sell, clearly he was more desperate than he let on
I've still got his number, might phone him once it's sitting on my drive and tell him what a good deal I got

) Even better I could send him a pic of me doing a moonie next to it !!

Glad it worked your way............I won't comment on the prior keeper as he could be a member on here but pleased you got desirable outcome & you weren't taken advantage of buy someone you didn't exactly warm towards.
I've experienced similar before - private folk asking unrealistic money & when you try to negotiate they often give rude &/or badly reasoned replies along lines of...........
"I know what its worth"
"It is what it is"
"Thats the price"
"Take it or leave it"
"I'm in no rush"
"If it sells it sells"
"I'm happy to keep it"
"I've been offered "£ XXX by main dealer"
"I don't need to sell it for less as I don't need the money"
"I'd rather keep it"
"There's another buyer that wants it"
"It's a used car - What did you honestly expect for the money"
Amazing how some succeed in life yet lack the most basic of interpersonal skills.........Many seemingly well off are intent on hanging on for every last penny.

I recall going to buy an E60 530d with one of my in-laws. It was at a small independent dealer. I was asked to do the dealing so thought start low (it was up for £11k and offered £10k) with meet in the middle as our aim. We got thrown out, almost literally! The guy went nuts.
I was in shock!
Although the in-law phoned him back and paid the asking price as he loved the car.
