sorry for the slow reply just in from work
i have done four x5 3.0d facelift turbo replacements (3 due to breather not been changed & 1 just wear 110k) & have never seen swirlflaps on any of them :) if u remove the cover ur manifold will be smooth where as on say a 530d 05 plate the manifold will have linkages on top of it which operates the flaps
hope this helps
but i would not worry about flaps  to much
change ur breather every 20k if short journeys & every 30k if long trips mainly its only £19+vat if u have the modded breather which came out in 2005 if u dont u
can change to the new design for £40+vat

part no--modded Breather assembly----- 11127799225 --£40+vat

partno--filter assembly for breather------ 11127799366---£19+vat

hope this helps
Just checked mine with no sign of swirl flaps thank god, however I did remove the oil filler cap whilst the engine was running and guess what .... smoke ,so I need a breather assembly. looking on Realoem it comes up with a different part number than the one above so i assume mine as its pre 2005 is the old style. My question is do i just oder part number 1112779925 ? Sunday tomorrow so it will have to wait till next week.

Cheers

Just in from the garage. Took the engine cover off to look for the Swirl Flaps. Took a while to exactly orientate my view of the engine (looking down and 'up' into the manifold area with a carefully positioned mirror and torch) to that in the PMW pdf (http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/swirl_flaps.pdf)....but once I was in position it was clear....there are NO swirl flaps fitted to my X5 (an E53 with June 2005 build date, fitted with M57TU 3.0D engine).
So....results from inspections all seem to indicate that, for whatever reason, the X5 appears 'swirl free'.

Excellent news. Mine is about the same (July), so saves me the trouble of looking.

Sorry to 'dig up' an old subject - but this thread concluded before I joined the forum

Was the final consensus that the 3.0d does not have swirl flaps?

Most in agreement, some have made the check and seem diesels don't have them.
