I think it now pays to know about the cars from your own research, and forums such as this, so that you are prepared for clueless sales people and partially competent technicians fronted by useless Service Dept drones.

Couldn't agree more with you comment above. But how sad that we have to research and read up on our vehicles in order to protect our interest, and not get over charged by dealers, and sometimes when required, explain things to employees of BMW, who are supposed to know more than the customer. That in my eyes is a terrible failing of the BMW dealer network. They can call me "Sir" all day and provide free wifi and coffee, but it gets them nowhere. All I want is good trustworthy dealer and a bit of honesty for a change.
To give you an example, the last time I went in for some new brake pads at BMW I was told I need new discs. It was rubbish. They are still fine to this day. How many people get sucked in by them and overcharged. It's not acceptable behaviour. Also to make it worse as a result of their behaviour I have started using a local BMW specialist who have been very good indeed. When BMW saw my service book the other day they saw the stamps from my specialist and said they would not take my car as PX and retail it as it doesn't have a BMW service history. Yet they are the very reason it doesn't !!
