It's a real saga unfortunately. Enjoy the weather out there and hopefully it can get sorted.

Hi Tim, Ive been following this thread as I too have a rather anoying missfire.I ve done all the things you have and a few more to try and trace mine. One of the little know problems that can arise with the N62 engine is failure of the heater element in the thermostat. This can lead to coolant leaking out and making its way up to the the DME by capilary action shorting out/interfering with engine signals and leading to spurious warning lights....
The DME is easy to get at - just 4 or so hex head screws, its about a 5 min job to pull it out to inspect the contacts.

Unfortunatly mine has still proved impossible to track down, next on my list is the PCV valve on the back of the inlet manifold. Ill let you know how it goes.

Just checked in with Auto Electrician (AES Sunderland)

Still no joy after numerous hours on it.

Collecting it from them on Friday (PM tomorrow) then it's off to BMW I go again.

Will keep you updated

Hope you have better luck than me Tim. Mine is looking like a blown head gasket / or valve. Just waiting on a second opinion before commiting to a strip down and the resulting £1000 + bill  :'( :'( :'(

Definitely not good.

I've since gone out and bought a 5 Series

So still BMW Ownership.....but have to say the X5 is a great car...but let down by the one I have...

So if your thinking of buying one...be aware for bills and issues.
