so not to spoil the party Beenq, but if you read my post about skimming the discs multiple times, I omitted to post that I had already changed the discs (twice!) and each time the problem went away. so that was disses being warped a total of five times. beggars belief but it is true. So hopefully, but not definitely, the problem may come back. fingers crossed.

Actually, you don't. HenryM3 wins - he was the first reply in the thread and he said discs  I'm sure he won't mind  )

Beenq, when you say you stripped the calipers and everything was OK. Do you mean they were sliding in the carrier OK. How did you check the pistons were OK, were you able to move them in and out with either fluid or air, did both pistons move at the same time and freely, were they equally easy to push back in. I ask only because a new set of discs will hide the problem for a short period. Hopefully it was the discs and your problem has gone permanently.

Hi smee and Henry , your both right and that is why I said will report back in a couple of weeks to see if it has truly gone (fingers crossed) regards to the pistons Henry , yes I removed calipers from disk on both sides and got a friend to apply brakes while I watched one side and the father-in-law the other side ( both came out fine as long as hopefully i can trust the father-in-law !!!) I moved them both back in to the caliper and no excessive force was used on either side re bled the system and went for a drive which in turn gave the same result as before. I went for the cheapest disks I could that same day from a local car parts supplier (I know I should have got better but was concerned at spending alot of money and it not fix the problem again) never heard of them to be honest , think it was bollyac ? Something along those lines. Now the missis uses it everyday to go down 3 junctions on the local motorway , so if something is still wrong it should raise its head pretty quickly , I thought I would let her use it for a week (as she thought there was nothing wrong before  :blink: !!!!!) And then have a test , what do you think ??

Just to add , I'm no mechanic by any means , but not scared to have ago so please if you feel the way I have approached things is wrong then by all means let me know your thoughts , the only thing I will say is I'm cheesed off with jacking the car up (bit of a standing joke with the neighbours now as well :-[)

Way I see it you have done things in a logical sequence and not just thrown money at it, assuming you and the wife aren't using the brakes like Lewis Hamilton then they'll probably be fine. Sometimes it just seems luck of the draw if discs warp, I'm sure some of Smees discs were more expensive but they still warped.

Ok fellas (hope your all good) just an update !!!!! , Everything seems good  I've got the car today and a good few miles under the belt and no wobble upon braking , I was going to start another thread but thought I would ask here first (mods please let me know if I need a new thread) it is steering related , I feel the steering is slightly on the notchy side as I turn the wheel ? Any instant ideas from anyone ? When I say notchy I suppose it feels a bit grainy (can't think of a better way to explain it lol) but not as smooth as I think it should be , thanks all

We've had that on a few vans lately, needed new racks - felt like you could feel the pump pulsing through the steering wheel if that helps!

Thanks for the reply mate , I'm really praying it's not !!! I didn't mention (apologies) that this is really only when stationary apply some revs and it seems to act normal , do you know if the pumps are weak on the e53 , I'm not sure either if the fluid has been changed so might give that a whirl first also , I understand if steering fluid is mega old that it doesn't perform ?

Your own suggestion of changing the oil should be your first move. People rarely do the PS oil

Cheers Henry , will do the fluid first , is the best way the turkey baster method ( take a load out , put some new in , lock the steering side to side and repeat until clear red etc) if it's never been done it's getting on for 16-17 years old !!!!!!

That's the way I did our E46 recently.  I removed as much as I could sensibly get at but without dropping the level to the point that sit might enter the system, refilled it and cycled the steering lock 2 lock, then repeated a few times until the fluid looked clear every time.

I thought that Dealers at one point were changing the fluid along with coolant and brake fluid at two year intervals, but I know they dropped that around 2010/11.  Supposedly it was 'no longer necessary'.

What fluid does it take just any ATF ?.
