X5 coming home tomorrow after gearbox re-con..
Re: X5 coming home tomorrow after gearbox re-con..
I bought my oil from euro car parts and the filter from BMW. Correct spec oil was still expensive though. And you need a safe way to access under the car with it level and the engine running (after going through the various gearlever positions ). Oil needs to be the right temperature when filling or you stand the chance of overfilling the 'box

Comma list the gearbox oil and having spoken to their technical team they assure me that its fine to mix the 2 (because you can't drain the whole system)
But I'm slightly nervous about using their oil even though it's more than half the price of the dealer oil

When I had the box done they asked if I wanted the proper oil or waste my money on Comma oil. Seemed a bit daft paying out for all that work and then try to cut costs on oil

I have to admit I'm with you in that one. For something as key as the gearbox I would only ever use manufacturer recommended oil type/make. Yes Comma may meet the spec, but for how long?

If memory serves comma oil was about 40% ish cheaper than the approved oil. I just didn't see the logic in rebuilding the box and then trying to cut costs.
Don't get me wrong, I have used all sorts of oils (including Comma oil)in previous cars, usually from motor factors as I used to get it at trade price. But for something that's is so expensive and complex as an automatic box I didn't think it was worth the risk.

Up-date on the gearbox for those interested :;;
Its only been a couple of weeks but I can see a vast difference, during a normal day my wife will tootle along to her jobs dont think her foot has been past the quarter on the throttle. Me on the other hand likes to play with the power pedal.... I've tried all the gearstick positions, fast accelaration, took it right over 110 no problem (on private road)... and I can say there are absolutely no problems at all.
I will say too that the "lurch" which was still showing a smaller nudge when we got it back has now almost dissapeared !..
I have tried to initiate the lurch by slowing right to a stop fast and slowly and there is nothing there at all ...
Compared to what it used to do I'm well pleased....
Well worth the money paid out..

Glad it has been a success and has made the car so much better. An unwanted 'present' it may have been, but now you can play

Hehe,...could be the fact that she's about 5ft,...and maybe just can't reach any further ??
Putting blocks on the gas pedal just so she can have fun is out of question !!
