I think the M3/M5 and the like are just halo cars for the rest of the range and the 4.8iS X5 was similar in its time as well, I know from experience that the M3 isn't that much better in the real world than a 330i but everyone thinks it is and in that sense that's where BMW do a fantastic job.

Its all about marketing the brand and getting people to buy into it and BMW do that very well...not quite as good as Audi though but they are making good progress now.

Sorry, I whole heartedly disagree there Lee.  The M3 is a totally different car to the 330i in my eyes, drove completely different and far more nimble.  Engine behaviour was completely different league to the 330.  You smoking crack tonight?

I agree the engine in the M3 is very different in character to a 330 but that doesn't for me make it better, hand on heart I prefer the 330 engine to the V8 in my M3 mainly because you have to be at 6k revs for the M3 to come alive which I just personally didn't like and I didn't find it very usable in the daily grind.

Also agree the chassis is very good in the M3 and far more resolved than the rest of the range but the M3 is the only car I have had where it has snapped sideways under braking which only goes to show its carrying miles too much weight.

What I am trying to say is the M3 is held is such epic regard that our expectations of it were sky high which only ended with us being disappointed by it and that is what BMW have been good at in getting people to think the M3 is the bees knees but in reality that wasn't the case...for us anyway.

Many people adore the M3 and that's fair enough because its engines have always won awards left right and centre and it always looks good on the nurburgring...sadly I don't have a race track at the end of my garden though.

Team mate of the late, great Barry Sheene (swoon) and then went on to be a total prat and the plate was one of many things I imagine he did that P155ed people off.
