Hi again,
Sorry I haven't had chance to get any pics as my Wife doesn't get home form work until after dark.
However my unit is exactly as in these pictures, there is no other 'pump' fitted to the front or anywhere else on the unit, it looks identical.
There is what looks like a solonoid valve on one of the pipes from the unit before it disappears through into the cabin, does yours have this ?
Just to confuse matters I have just had a look at my old faulty unit & it has the same stickers on it, Thermo Top C on the side & Thermo Top Z on the front ?
The new one has no sticker on the front just Thermo Top C on the side.
If it is any use to anyone you are welcome to my old unit, although to confirm it was replaced as faulty ( would not fire ) so it may not be servicable anyway & it is reasonably heavy so it would be best to collect ( Located near Middlesbrough, North East England. )
Regards, Phil.

MIne used to do this too. I think it has something to do with the control module on the top. I ended up replacing the whole unit with one from ebay and it worked perfectly after that.

I checked mine and it's z on the front and c on the side. Only reason I can think of is they all started life as thermotop c's and had parts removed and got a z label. This would cost a lot less for BMW to buy in and would help them charge the premium to have aux heat and park heat function. Only a theory.
Just need pics of a proper thermo c now to see where the pipes run

Looks like a pump and preformed hose as part of this independent heating retrofit kit from bmw (which isnt available). I assume this is the same upgrade kit that is available from webasto.

Just fired it up on pin 1 again....sounds like it's working and interior vents come on after 5 mins. Open the header tank and there is no water circulation at all. The pipe coming out of the webasto us hot up to what look like 2 solanoid valves then it's all cold although the webasto is still running and is hot. Webasto runs for a while then shuts down while interior blowers still run, then the webasto will fire up again for a while and just continue this loop for as long as there is power to pin 1. When the engine is running the water circulates fine and can see this in the header tank.

Hi,
It sounds to me like these solonoid valves are not opening on your car or the pump is not working as I don't understand why it doesn't stay on and at least heat the engine ?
As far as I am aware all X5's along with some other BMW's & Rovers have this auxilary heater & the ability to use it for park heating by programing the OBC or fitting a telestart, although it was never set as standard on the OBD on UK cars.
Someone said they had to change the circuit board before it would operate but I wonder if this was just due to the existing circuit board being faulty.
As I said earlier although my old heater has Top C & Top Z stickers on it, it is identical to the heater they replaced it with that just had Top C on it ? It does not appear to have any other parts fitted & both the old one & new one operated via live to pin1 via a maplins relay.
Also to the best of my knowledge the telestart offered by BMW consists of a control box that plugs into the existing wiring loom in the boot & a remote control that operates it, they do not fit ( as far as I'm aware ) any other parts which they would have to do if some cars hade this facility & some didn't.
Do you have a scanner as this should tell you if there is a fault with either your pump or solonoids ?
I've been thinking about getting one as they are only about £40.00.
Hope you get it sorted.
Phil.
