I'm actually impressed with my mpg , on a 63 mile drive with approx 40 miles motorway , cruise control set between 65-68mph I averaged 35.7mpg ! Same journey in my 2ltr golf id have got around 32.

Looks like anything over 70mph really starts to reduce economy .

Ps - has anyone hit the top speed limiter? I wonder what these big 4x4's feel like at 150+ ?

Re X 5 ,  4D , i get almost exactly the same figures as you on the motorway , when the engines warm / hot  it averages  34 mpg on runs , at 65 - 75 mph .go faster and cruise at 85 -90 and its down to 30 mpg . Round town when its cold and  on short journeys  24 mpg is average.

Heading off on holiday early next week to Europe for approx 3,500 miles so we'll see what it averages over that distance...

Don't think some spirited driving on Route Napoleon, Stelvio Pass, de-restricted Autobahn and the Nurburgring will help....

So after our European driving holiday here are the figures for our 2010 X40D....

2965 miles
30.7 MPG
41.3 MPH Average speed

Which considering the weight / size of the car, the fully loaded boot and 4 people on board is pretty impressive. Alpine passes were included as were Autobahn runs at 100MPH+, Laps of the Nurburgring and plenty of city driving.

I have a 2012 E70 30D M Sport and usually get around 28 mpg around town.  That is a good bit more that I used to get from my Volvo S60 T5.  On a motorway run I get just over 30 but that is at just below speed camera trigger.  I have once done about 150 miles at less than 60 due to weather and averaged over 35 mpg.  Speed makes a big difference.

Just did our trip to Center Parcs and our 3.0D with 138K on it averaged 32.5mpg with a roof box, full boot of kit and 4 mountain bikes on the back.

I know this topic goes on and on, and many find the BMW figures way out but I have to say for me they are OK.

I had my 40d new in November 2010, I have competed very little miles (16,000). The other day I did a trip of around 550miles, 400miles motorway and 150 miles country lanes. On the motorway I sat at 85 or below and obviously slow on the lanes. at the start I set the trip and checked it at the end, the average was 36.2mpg. I get about 32 around town normally. I think its all about the way you drive, I am light on the pedals and drive the X5 like a large car, not a small sports car, you do not neet to 'floor' the pedal to get a responce, with over 300bhp on tap.

You may think this is not the way but I can assure you I do not hang around, I just don't drive it like I stole it. I used to have a Z4 3.0si and never got 36mpg out of that "maybe I drove it differently"

On a recent 65 mile journey , approx 60 miles of it up the m40 , cruise control set between 64mph and 60mph , aircon on around half the journey , I managed a staggering 38.2mpg !!!

I can definitely crack 40, just need to set cruise to 60 and have aircon off , which of course is incredibly BORING :)
