ok thanks - and do you think the Jump Start 1000 would suffice to start a 3.oD X5 with a complete flat battery (I do have a conditioner but there are situations where you are faced with a battery that needs started quickly)?

Might be a little short on power, especially on a cold day when the preheaters take a whack out of it too.  You may only get one or two tries.

You need to check the CCA rating (quoted as 400A normal, 900A max for the 1,000) on any model.  The 1000 is about as low as I would want to go on the 30d.  The 1224 might be a better match if the 4000 is out of budget limits.

The OEM battery is rated at 830A CCA as a guide, and it will usually only need that full whack on a very cold start.

Not even that - going to some very remote parts of scotland over the christmas holidays and didn't want 17kg's worth of jump pack in the boot

so if they have an internal battery then presumably they have a shelf life in the same way that say a Bosch Silver S5 does (five years or so) .......but presumably also if you keep them charged and are only using occasionally it would be quite a long shelf life ?

And can you/should you connect them to a battery conditioner?

Yes they have a shelf life, and if they don't use a mains charger - many do - then you can use a battery conditioner.  I would imaging that as long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions then the battery will last, and they are replaceable.

They use a low amperage 12V lead/acid or AGM/Gel battery.  Similar to a motorbike battery.

Well I've gone ahead and ordered the Clarke 4000 so should get it in the next day or two (£131 click and collect at local Machine Mart store)
