No - think it might have been knocked and the cogs are broken. Spare parts from these guys may help - courtesy of another forum member who did the hard graft. You'll have to search for his post though.

This how to is brilliant, just carried out this fix and thist post made it all the easier to do. Someone else (previous owner) had been there before me and made a complete balls of it, a washer wedged in to try and hold the switch in but due to the little triggers being fitted back to front it was never going to work. 1 hour later and both switches are now installed correctly and folding mirrors working as they should. Happy happy days. Thanks again Sanj.

Phil UK,
I've just ordered a new motor, gears and metal internal cover for my mirror from this company in Taiwan. They also sell the micro switches:

a bit of a bump to the topic.
I believe my motors are dead. was anyone successful in ordering these motors from this supplier or anywhere else?

Hi everyone,  just a quick follow up on getting the cover off. I assume it is the same for all X5 E53's from 2000-2006. Anyway, I have a 2004.  So, newbie with this. Is it a matter of prying in and pressing in with a flat head at that point while squeezing the top and bottom of the cover in?

Just don't want to break any clips.

thanks
James
