I'm not as clever as you to do all this multi quoting sat on my arse on the phone.

I agree a 3 is too small

Yes possibly 12 months

Agreed Id rather hit a deer in an X or a hummer

You know what I don't even like the F series 5 series so my 535d comments have been because this at least a BMW forum!

I've been lucky to drive a number of 997 Gt3 RSs on road and track and it wasn't until then that I could see what the fuss was about on Porsches. When we looked at changing the Mrs car we were thinking about the f type but it was taking ages to launch so we ordered a boxster without driving one. Unfortunately if you get carried away like we did they aren't that cheap anymore but the 911 has shot up in price too! We had a 991 cab for a week or so because the boxster was delayed and everybody thought we would be disappointed when ours turned up and we weren't. at that level the boxster is better. I expect one day I will chop the lotus in for a 997 RS but they are atill up around £80k+ for a decent one and I can't justify that for a track toy.

Sorry to hear about the old man, would be a shame to sell it for the reason you've mentioned and they are a great way to un wind!

Just to chip in RE: the 3 reasons for owning - what you need to remember is one person's 3 reasons are just another person's justification, etc.

For me, the high up driving position, the ease of getting in and out (dodgy back / hip), the fact it's the first car my kids have not moaned about space in (had 3 series in saloon, touring and coupe as well a couple of 5 series), the height of the loading area / split tailgate is ideal for gettimg my bikes* in and out and I don't have to take a wheel out either. The extra boot height has worked too for loading some large boxes in for work, etc (rare but useful when only 1 of 2 required vans turned up on site!).

*despite dodgy back and hip yes I still cycle - it's my sanity and keeps me mobile!

Only real negative is that it is a tight turn off my drive so a big car makes that slightly more challenging.

How about the plain simple fact that sometimes one prefers the looks of an X5/X6 etc to the looks of an estate. As practical as I am sure estates are I would never own one purely because I do not like the looks.

I definitely prefer the look of the E70 X5 over the F11 5 series touring.  But I actually think the older E61 5 series looks better than the saloon.

I think a lot of people thought that about the e60/61

They couldn't hide a whole E70 though!
