Well decided to go down the breakers yard route. Funds are a bit tight at the min with a new baby. £750 plus vat from midland bmw. Supposed to have done 75k but you never know. In the process of fitting it, my word what a job. Lol. Can't wait to get it running again though.

At 750+vat the used one seems the bettee choice. Im always abit sceptical with a re.con engine as to what theyve re conned. Do you have any coding issues then on the x5 just my 05 transit had no end of computer shite when swapping out the diesel pump. I was going to just swap engine on that but told it was even worse.

Right then. After a complete nightmare of the engine from the scrap yard was the wrong one and me completely losing my temper with them, I have had my engine fully reconditioned. New rods, new crank, new oil pump, new head, new cams, timing tensioner and guides etc etc. Some parts brand new genuine, some reconditioned. £3200! At least in know all is going to be right and will fit. Should be with me Saturday to go back in:-) got to run it in after tho
Will try and get some pics but can't promise as I will be on a mission to get it running

I would also like to meet the incompetent idiot that has previously worked on the engine that has caused all of this! Rant over

Ouch, but at least you should now have a 'known quality' engine, even if the bill was more than expected.
What had a previous tinkerer done/not done?

Well the engine has been to pieces before. For what reason I don't know. The timing was out and the surface on the conrods look as if they have been hit by a blunt object on previous removal, that is what has caused the bearings to fail this time. The amount of swarf in the sump after the oil was cleaned away was not even funny, hence why it have gone for a fully reconditioned unit. I would have always had doubts if I went the cheap route. Don't get me wrong the bill hurts but atleast I have piece of mind now.

All finished now
. Took best part of 2 days to put it all back together. All worth it in the end. The engine sounds really quite. So much different to the previous one even when that was running ok. Overall I'm a happy man now it's back on the road. I'm lucky I can do it myself and not pay labour otherwise I may have had to re mortgage. Lol. Oil change after 1000 miles and keep revs below 2000rpm which is difficult but not too much of a problem and then all is good. I really hope nobody else ever has this problem, really was a pain.
