My Indy is aa general good mechanic. He has worked on alot of cars and I think when he quoted me for my service, he thought it was the same as servicing a 03-06 5 series.

Anyway job doen and he changed the vortex breather. Im slightly annoyed that I bought the whole housing as opposed to just the loo roll replacer as that left me £40 out of pocket, so in all it actially cost me £40 more then I thought. The guy at BMW dealers failed to mention I didnt need the housing, just the replacement the Bast*rd......

Anyway replacing the fuel filter was tricky to get to, not change. My Indy just removed all bolts and propped the cover open and worked from there as opposed to removing the whole thing.

Again thanks for advice and patience.

Peace,

Stew

Didn't know you could buy the vortex on it's own.  My Parts Dept have also always sold it as a complete kit.

For the same reason there's no Haynes Manual.......they don't want us practical lot preventing them from getting their £200 an hour to do it for us!! >:(

I've seen some stupid stuff on the X5 but this is rediculous. The air filter and vortex is bad enough on the diesel but that's doable on a sunny day, a contortionist to hand a chiropractor on speed dial. It doesn't make it easy for BMW either but then again they have ramps.....jacks to hold stuff up....and a meter running for time spent.

If it made any difference I'd write a "WTF were you thinking" letter to BMW...but it wouldn't

I think it's listed as a seperate part but from what I read would only fit the new casing....so first time round from foam would be the lot...which is what I did

No you can't tell without stripping off the covers, that's not a big job, and worth the time in piece of mind, a lot cheaper and easier than replacing your turbo or engine. :)
They started to fit the vortex ones to the E53 in late 2005. Mine is a 55 plate and had the vortex one fitted
As far as I know its not classed as part of normal service schedule at BMW.

That would need someone like Jason to check the actual ECU map and see if it had been altered.  Or stick it on a Dyno and see if it goes way past 218bhp........ 8)

Or if the 0-62 is well under 9 seconds which was about the time for a standard E53 3.0D I think....

Or if you leave a 40d for dead....unlikely but worth a try....unless pvr's driving it... >:D

A remap perhaps? Not easiest to tell until you get another remap guy to look at the file. That costs money...

Not quite, drop him a PM, tell him you're a forum member and would just like to know if it's been mapped. He may send you one of his consoles and get you to read the file and mail it to him.
