Re: 2001 3.0d gearbox issue help
When you filled it did you cycle through all available gears at regular intervals??
Then rechecked the fluid?
These boxes can hold a bit of air in the system that needs bleeding out, especially in the torque convertor as mentioned earlier.
As said before you need to know fluid pressures with drive current etc to know whats going on..
The box has 2 internal speed sensors (turbine speed from input shaft, and drive speed from output shaft)
It uses these and several inputs from the CAN bus to deduce what gear is needed, what fluid pressure to apply and to monitor and knowq when the clutches are slipping so it can either increase pressure and hold or throw to Trans Fail Safe.
As a try start the car and unplug the gearbox umbilical.
Locks it in 4th/5th and applies full fluid pressure.
If it does exactly the same as before then you can semi reject electronics issues as they are not in use at that point.
follow link below to the manual for these boxes.

This shows you pretty much everything you want to know... and stuff you don't....
there is a diagram of the signal paths available in there.

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Re: 2001 3.0d gearbox issue help
Thanks for that steamyrotter i have contacted the guy who supplied the reconditioned box and he is coming to have a look but from what he has said he believes the problem is a speed sensor so fingers crossed it will be done and dusted today
Re: 2001 3.0d gearbox issue help
Hi just a quick update after nearly 3 weeks of problems the X is finally fixed!
It turned out that the reconditioned gearbox had problems with the electrics in the gearbox so thank god it did not cost me anymore.
I will upload a few pictures of the car in the next few minutes.
Thanks again for all your advice it has been much appreciated

Great News......
My rebuilt box didn't work correctly either and was completely replaced under warranty too - so no cost to me. Mine was a damaged casing that was just out of tolerance.
Now you can finally get to enjoy it properly.

Re: 2001 3.0d gearbox issue help
I was so relieved to find out it was not anything else as someone posted on here it could have been an oil pressure problem which i was dreading as its cost me a small fortune anyway so was glad it was them who had to put it straight.
Im just looking forward to putting it through it paces over the next few weeks
