Makes sense fuel consumption/emisson  & sales figures wise.

4WD historically returns 5 - 6 mpg less than 2WD on certain models like the X1 for instance... the 2wd is far more economical.      I bought the E70 X5 for the 4WD & I'll be looking at the XDrive 3 Series Touring  this week.

Good one...... :D

xDrive system did indeed come in on the Facelifted E53 along with the ZF 6-speed box.  Modified versions went into the E70 & 71.  The real economy shift was with the 8-speed transmission which arrived on various models in 2010 I think.  Hence the lower VED tax band too for those models.

Oh, and there is this model in the new X5 (F15) line-up (though initially for the US market only) - F15 sDrive 25d - N47D20, 2WD

I think we are mixing up out xdrive systems and naming. The xdrive system did indeed come out with the E53 but I don't believe the E53 ever had that as a name.
Also, there have been incremental changes to efficiency as I stated. The October 07 E70 still had a six speed but was more efficient and in a lower tax bracket. The release of the xdrive-named models and eight speed transmission saw further improvements.

Yes, it does seem a case of crossed wires.  ;)

I don't ever see myself considering a 2WD X5. It just seems wrong
