Re: X5 4.8 wanted
It's a big decision and therefore worth taking your time to ensure that you make the right choice of model and then find the best car with in your budget. I agree that a diesel will lose less money than a V8 but no X can be seen as an investment.

Re: X5 4.8 wanted
Fair play, no car is an investment, not dismissing the 4.8 if the right one at the right price came along but my budget is slowly rising all the time to secure a good one and as such it takes it into the realms of the 40d. The 4.8 is going to be less desirable over time than the diesel 40d due to running costs so I need to bear this in mind with the price I pay now.

Ah yes! Cars and ever increasing budget. The infamous 'for just another £xxxx I could get'
How well do I know that.

I watched an old Fifth Gear (2007) on Dave yesterday, with little Vicki doing a test on the E70 4.8is. She loved it, but with some spirited driving only managed a return of 8.8 mpg :'(

My worry is for the future, my work is very local to me at the moment but with me wanting to keep the car for 5yrs plus I would have to sell any 4.8 if my circumstances changed and I had a fair distance to drive each day given the fuel economy (or lack of) of the V8.

Re: X5 4.8 wanted
My ever increasing budget has led me to what seems a mint 40d with all the correct spec and colour I want, not viewed it yet but it's a late 2010 model with very low miles and by all accounts it's spotless. The price is just shy of 35K (private sale) and I would hope to get it for 33K ish.
It has panoramic roof, rear view camera and BMW service pack until 2015 (?) BMW warranty until October.
I'm stretched to the limit on this price wise, HPI check is a must but wondering if BMW dealers do a reasonable priced inspection? Future value and running costs on the 40 d is my justification for skinting myself, would this seem a sensible decision if it's a minter?

Well you are covered for 7 months so don't worry too much. You can always extend it.

Re: X5 4.8 wanted
Sounds good, what sort of things does the 'service pack' cover?

The full service costs that are due within the time period covered.
