Quite re sensors, why not put the obd port under, oh I don't know, the bonnet for example which would be far more obvious for somebody to tamper with.

Will it kill their sales, why should. Is an Audi or a merc anymore secure.

Not according to the throwaway comment from my Dealer they aren't!  But that could be them trying to deflect the blame.

BMW GB Hotline for this is:  0800 083 4397

Fix only currently for X5 & X6.  8 weeks to wait for the other models.......money from the 'Goodwill Budget' so din't expect any other 'goodwill' then!!

For those of you with BMWs affected by this security issue (other than X5/6s), I spoke to a senior manager in BMW customer services earlier today on another matter.  During the call she mentioned the fix is being worked on and should be available at some point in November. So if your car's affected, definitely worth checking with your dealer to get the car booked in.

Dear All,

thank you for this thread. I am in the process of booking car to get a fix. One dealership (and BMW customer service) confirmed there is another issue with my car (X5 feb 2011 built) - Programming control and this has to be done as well. For some reason my main dealer says it is same as Watchdog security issue shich apparently is not. They also told me key cannot be programmed to fold mirrors which is not true either...
Time to change dealer from Stephen James to Synther .....

The question I have though - does anyone know if this security fix will not allow future ECU remap by Jason ?

The 'Security Update' won't affect the ECU - different system from the one being played with/updated as that is for the access controls - often referred to as the Comfort Access Update even if you don't have it as an option (like on my X6).  Jason told me that he needs to remove the ECU from the car to do the remaps (on the 40D at least).  Whether that is still the case a few months later I cannot tell...

Not all versions can have the mirror fold programmed on the key by a Dealer.  Whilst it is possible to have it done as the functionality is in the car, it's a 'Safety Issue' from BMW's viewpoint and most Dealers therefore will not do it (Mine won't even after being told the code line to change).  You need to get into the car programming to make the change.

Thanks for prompt response Richard, I asked them to program mirrors to fold among other things - will see how it goes. Booked for Thursday, will post update once all done.

Not sure about future remaps but it will delete ones already on the car!

Has anyone found a way around that yet?  I remember reading somewhere about a reference number in the system being incremented and if picked up by the Dealer would as you say, result in an erasure and overwrite......even if the ECU wasn't being touched by any mods/updates from BMW......meaning the map had to be re-applied. >:(

Certain things could be updated without changing/loosing the map but when I checked with the dealer he said this one would delete it.

I didn't bother in the end

BMW have redesigned the cars so that the problem that previously allowed those in the know access to the car has gone away.  A software 'fix' was also applied.  You should be fine.

a thief coding a key is still possible. The only "fix" was to stop the windows dropping on the turn of the drivers door key.

I've had a viper fitted to my 2013 E70. This disables the OBD port.
