If there is pad residue on the discs bad enough for it to cause judder under braking at speed you should be able to feel the pedal pulse if you ride the brakes at really slow speed if the soles of your shoes are thin and your feet are sensitive, alternatively if you have a dti clock dial or can borrow one you can check for run out on the discs
Thinking back I cant remember whether the pedal modulated or not when I had the problem. I am almost convinced though that my problem was due to the way the caliper, guide pins and pads worked in unison together. One outer pad when removed had a noticeable BEVEL about 1cm wide top to bottom on the ears end it as if it had been worn at an angle other than flat to the face of the disc. Was this a jamming or seizing of the way the caliper was working bearing in mind its the guide pins that help it squeeze from either side evenly.

I gave the whole lot a bloody good clean, swapped for new discs and pads....and no problem from then on.

If it were me and no run out of the disc detected then I'd be tempted to pull the brakes apart and give the carriers a good clean and ensure there is free movement and no notches on all faces wher the ears of the pads contact the 2 halves of the pistion/carrier . De crud and polish the guide pins too

Can't do any harm...costs nowt to try

my 2p worth
