Gear box fine this morn from finishing nights, but just gone out in it and would not go into D as before.
I foned them up and it's going back in on the 18th of this month, so now i need to give then info on this seal that may be leaking. Where is it or what seal is it likly to be, and whats the location of it.
This time they are having it for 2 full weeks, as i'm dropping it off the day i go on mi hols.
cheers

You really need a proper gearbox specialist who knows the BMW boxes for this one......its a well-documented problem with oil leaking past an internal seal somewhere. It needs opening and rebuilding / replacing the seal etc - there is a Technical Bulletin on this as I said - if you search on xoutpost you'll find it.

The friction plates or front drum may be worn
The worn friction materials then blocks the filter ,when cleaned or oil changed is done the gear box will then work for a short time before completely giving up
We just helped power cat with his rebuild on his gear box, have some pics of failed and worn parts

Hi guys i have had my x5 3l d for 2 weeks now and have a simular fault which i have come on to ask for some help also
sorry to butt into the post
My fault is simular as in it is worse when cold i reverse out of the space which is fine put it into drive and it revs and suddenly jumps into gear it has got worse the last few times and as said in above posts it could be dangerous in traffic ect, the car has got warenty so im not worried about cost i just wanted to know if there are any bodges that the dealer may try and pull? and any ways of testing to make sure they have done the job correctly
am i taking it i have the same problem as above?
thanks

I'd say you have the same fault as me OP, as you now no you have a fault try not the make it jump into gear. This could do more damage, set off in second and after 50 yards or so pop back into D.
Dropping mine off this Thursday and then I go for 2 weeks, so all been well should be sorted on my return.

I have also booked back in with dealer for friday (the car wont be used much until then) he said they will experiance fault for them selves then if needed will send to a gearbox specialist they use, I also spoke to a family friend who is a mechanic who made enquirys with a gearbox specialist he knows who says it may be a pump within the gearbox which jams and then suddenly all power comes at once?
I dont have any faults coming up on dash is this normal?
just glad its not my expence as warenty is unconditional and it will be sorted
Hope u get sorted soon scooby1doo1

Cheers I hope it gets sorted to mate
No faults come up on mine, and once it been run it's fine for the rest of the day. Changers gear when it should and all smooth.
Mines going back in, in the morning so in 2 weeks time when I get it back all should be well. When I first told them of the fault, I asked what do they do if they can't find a fault or fix it. They told me they would send it to quarry motors at Sheffield, so when I drop it off in the morning I'm going to ask them to send it there first off. Quarry motors is a bimmer specialist.
When yours is sorted post up what the fault is and a fix, as yours will prob be sorted before mine, this then gives other members a guide to a pos fix.

Sure sounds like a pressure issue, which could be the pump, or the control valve's - the boxes use 'overlap' timing on the clutch controls to make the changes/selection smoother, and you might have a 'sticky' one so effectively 'banging' a clutch.
Not something a BMW Dealer can fix as they aren't allowed to. Transmission specialist for that box type is your best bet. Fault lights are rare unless the box actually goes into an 'emergency mode' - the dreaded Trans Failsafe! warning. The other faults are just logged for a code reader to find - not helpful if you don't happen to have one, are miles from anywhere and have a misbehaving box!!

I have been informed by the dealer today the transmission specialist has experianced the fault and suspects a clutch/pressure problem,
the gearbox is going to be rebuilt and will have a years warenty
I am just glad I dont have to pay for this work the dealer has been true to his word and judging by the rough costings on here im sure he is in for £2000 ish bill
So what else major could happen? i am a month into a 2 year unconditional warernty!

Glad the faults been rectified - its a well known one even though BMW UK quite shamefully simply pretended it didn't exist while in the US, the boxes were being swapped out as per that Technical Bulletin. Mrmjn, have a read through the buying guide that AW8 did for other things that can go worng - immediate suspects that come to mind in a diesel is the turbo, the panoramic sunroof if you have one, the self-levelling suspension in the 4.4 / 4.6 / 4.8 cars, the BM54 radio module.......quite a long list really
but then that's what the warranty is for!!! Luckily you have one!!

Glad you got it sorted mate
Well back off my hols on friday 02:30, picked the car up at 09:00. Said their was some faults with the box, and have been fixed. Not good as it's not been stripped and checked, so the fault will prob come back. I said if i have to bring it back again, i want it to go to an indy first off. Looks like their not that good after all, and don't keep to their word.
Just have to see now, good to be back in it though.
