Move the gear lever to the left and it goes into sport.

In the ‘sport’ position you also get manual shift control - assuming you don’t have paddle shift?

No paddle shift so will be gear lever control. It’s sporty enough for me anyway with all that torque... need it to mellow a bit

Yes I just mean the gear lever to the left  raises the rpm instantly and they a prod on the gas pedal makes for rapid progress more like my old manual 330d .M sport doesn't have a sport button as such ..mine doesn't anyway and I find the steering is quite heavy Adam but I've 21's with runflats on now with 285's on the front ! Bmw tend to have heavier weighted steering so I'm surprised it seems light and I still drive old cars without power steering too lol

I’ve got the 20 inch runflats and 315/35 rears. The steering is so light that I need a slight touch to go around corners. My other cars steering tightens up when I pick up speed but the X5 is linear in that respect. If it had a sports setting that could have stiffen the chassis a bit and suspension.
To be honest I love the light steering as being a bit lazy in driving it takes little effort. More of a cruiser than a speedy Gonzales’s

Definitely a cruiser,  I just put it in D and leave it there 99% of the time, feels more like a hgv than a car but that's probably due to my old e46 being quite small by comparison .Its more relaxing to drive  and isn't troubled by speedbumps  and the high up driving position means lights are not shining in your eyes as much at night and you can see much better over parked cars at junctions  :)
Glad I didn't get a v8 m3 as that would have been all aggression,everybody going to slow in your way and road rage  :P

Visited a local garage today and had  short test drive of another 4.0d. Seemed to drive just like mine. Little Revvy at low speed which I think is probably normal for this car. My assumption is that the car needs to rev higher in low gears to provide that needed power to get it going but shifts up around 25-30 and it’s around 1000revs -1200 then on.
I’m trying to post videos but not sure how.
Looking at the video carefully. I notice that it starts off at around 1000 revs which changes to 1500-2000 revs as it moves up gears to 30-40mph. It never really passes 2000 revs unless you put your foot down. What surprised me was that it can get up to 2000 revs during  the early gears which doesn’t happen on my other car . But it always comes down after a change of year.

I have a warranty on it so that’s not an option for me. Are you saying that stock is normally like that and Remap sorts it.

Clogging of the intake trunk with soot from the EGR system?  It’s all I can think of.

Is it more noticeable when the car is cold?  The gear change points shift as the engine warms up.  Cold engines hold the rpm higher than warm.  As an example, mine won’t go into 8th at 50mph until fully warm.  It will hold 6th or 7th until then.

Not sure how hands on you are....
However lift the Engine cover, remove the Air cleaner housing (no tools required, it lifts up)
May have the wiggle the inlet trunking out also
Locate the charge air pressure sensor item 13
Disconnector wiring plug
Unbolt the single 10mm locating bolt
Wiggle & pull out the sensor
Check the amount of soot

Image

Thereafter check the lines from the Exhaust cooler, (6) most likely gummed with treacle allbeit, it’s the line from/to the cooler that runs to the front of the engine that’s worst effected!
Prudent to pull the EGR & clean, access is difficult, though it does lift out with minimal fuss!


Pull the manifold is relative straight forward bolt 19 is an ar5eh0le

I suppose I could get a garage to do that as struggle with anything more than an oil change.
If it’s suited up then it needs a decoke I guess.
I’ve noticed on my F10 that it revs higher when it’s cold.
But not noticed any higher revs on E70 when it’s cold it’s same as when it’s warm.
