Need to confirm, but when I took it in he thought the factory fitted ones would now be available through parts. I got the call exactly a week after I took it in.

Fortunately my local dealer had 3 new X5's in the showroom which I pointed out to the guy looking at my car. He said in the past they couldn't get them through parts and I think he said were delivered to the customer direct? He thought that now they're standard, he would be able to

I purchased a dealer demo X5 4.0D MSport in carbon black with 20" rims and 4,000 miles about 7 weeks ago. On test drive I did not spot the paint chips, but on collection (after valeting) it was obvious that both rear flanks were badly pock marked. Fortunately for me the dealer (Listers Boston) volunteered the problem to me and offered to fix it under warranty. I suspected gravel track driving at too high a speed, but the dealer said that they thought the paint was too soft. After one week they collected the car (and loaned me their new demo X5) and 3 weeks later I got it back - apparently it took some time for BMW UK to accept it as a warranty issue. They have resprayed the flanks and fitted protective film as discussed by others above. So apart from the annoyance of having an issue with an almost new car I have been happy with the way the dealer dealt with it.

As others have said they ought to do this as a matter of course but guess that would involve too much money as a lot of owners may never notice nor make any issue of it.

What they really should do however is to repair all cars being sold through the AUC scheme as part of the used car prep. Given BMW will stand the costs its nothing to the dealer so they should be putting in a claim for any used X5 on their site with 20" wheels.

Went to pick the car up today after dropping it off to have the work done 8 days ago and it turned out to be a disaster.

Basically, 4 wheels had been replaced and look fine, but the protection film was completely crap. Aside from the fact that the piece that goes on the door was missing, the other two pieces (wheel arch and along the bottom under the door) looked like some cheap shit picked up off the market and fitted by a three year old. To put the icing on the cake, something was stuck to the passenger side front door and had put a fairly deep scratch in it - definitely done in their care as you could see where they'd done a poor excuse for a valet.

The workshop guy said that was the kit BMW had sent. I took him inside to show him a new X5 in my colour and he agreed that it was clearly not the same.

When I said they could keep it and sort it out, they initially said they needed their loan car back! I pointed out that this would almost certainly mean a respray as the rear doors are not protected still!

Fortunately before I could tell them it was tough shit as I was keeping their loan car, they managed to find another one for the next unlucky customer.

Other than that, great service - I took my broken iPhone into an Apple Store last week with 4 days left on the warranty and within 10 minutes i was walking out with a new replacement. If only Apple made X5's!

If anyone is getting their car done, make sure you show them a new X5 and be clear you expect it to look the same i.e. the 3 piece kit and fitted professionally so there's no bubbles under it!
