Done! Bought a bargain set of wheels with "star" marked winter tyres on them, which effectively means free wheels with a fresh set of tyres.

Anyone know how much internal space there is with 4x wheels with tyres on in there? How many will fit in the boot without dropping the all the back seats?

Hope they're better than my other winter set (Angio) - They maxed out the balance on one of the rims even though these were new and run Contis. Was too much hassle returning one rim to the shop for replacement.
Just have the issue of our house now looking like a pit stop.
Have to figure out how best to secure the nice summer wheels from the local thieves.
Do the main dealer offer a tyre hotel or is it prohibitively expensive and "at your own risk" ergo they keep them in an unsecured barn?
Any tips? Time for a general thread post.

Answered your other post.

With regards to space in the car, I needed all the seats down to move my X6 set (20") back to the Dealer!  Even the X5 could only get three in the boot and one on a blanket on the back seat.

3 pages and no one has discussed whether you need to replace all 4 to protect the transfer box?

All of a sudden my staggered 19's are filling me with dread.

That subject has been covered elsewhere on the Forum.  Same advice applies to any 'X'.  It's not just the Transfer box, it's the diffs too.  I've got staggered 19 & 20 and never had a problem.  I only use OEM spec tyres.

As X5S said, I've also read something somewhere else this week on this site covering that.
Just to add my tuppence:
On the Audi and LR I always replaced tyres on axle sets at the same time to avoid the diffs having to do extra work, so will do the same with the F25, besides which I don't fancy getting in to an asymmetric braking scenario and who knows what it will do to ASC/torque vectoring. With the Audi it was advised to keep axle sets identical and ideally to replace all 4 at once - but I figured that was the dealer using me as a cash machine.
Just a bit concerning about transmission failures but good to hear that the transfer box is coping with different sizes front to rear. Presumably less of an issue as most systems are designed to provide more torque biased to one axle set for improved handling.
Loved my Scoobie and never heard of transmission issues on those - They're built like tractors and capable of repair free starship mileage, alas the Forester is not a terribly exciting ownership prospect except for the model with the monster sized engine.

To be fair, the Scooby was off-road rated and had some rally capability......well may be just little bit  :drive:

Staggered wheel sets should never be an issue because the rolling diameters are 'matched' through the different tyre sizes.

I had a conversation with the tyre tech at BMW Maidenhead.
He advised to keep within 3mm tread between front and rear axles.
* rated rft or non rft tyres will not affect warranty as long as all tyres are the same manufacturer.

Don't know if I've asked before, but when getting the tyres changed, do they use the existing TPMS Sensors on the wheels or install new ones when new tyres are fitted?

Also, when the tyres are changed, so any settings on the car need resetting?

Thanks

My tpms has tripped twice in a week.

Should i be shitting myself? I've got no idea how much tread is left.  I bought the car (2012 30D m sport 19 inch staggered wheels) in May. It's got Pirelli all round at the moment.

Minimum of 2 new tyres?

Matt, when you say tripped - what do you mean? have you a slow puncture or something else?
I phoned BMW Maidenhead again this week, to ask the cost of having the TMPS sensors fitted to the winter wheels i bought in the summer - the cost including fitting comes to £400  :(
so the total set has set me back £720 , which i can live with.

my summer tyres - Pirelli P Zeros on 19" staggered setup are starting to wear pretty thin now. i can feel and hear the tell tale signs of low thread as the car comes to a halt (between 10-20mph). I'm hoping to eek out another months worth of driving, and then swap over to the winter (square ) setup by 1st November.

It's a slow puncture on the rear. Dips to about 28psi before the monitor kicks in. Been topping it up (have a small compressor in the boot)
A tyre shop said they could probably repair it as it hasn't gone right down so hasn't damaged the reinforced rim.

I phoned my local BMW and they didn't know what I was talking about when I asked if there was the need to replace all 4.
Did a lot of digging and there's a mixed bag. My fronts are ok tread wise, the rears don't have much left.
Ordered 2 P Zeros that match the front, £156 each from Camskill. Will get them fitted soon.

Also read through the owners manual and there's sod all in there about replacing all 4 each time.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

Mrs rushed me into getting the tyres done so "we" can go on a long distance drive to a sodding designer outlet on Saturday.
She's taken the car to the tyre shop this morning then pissed off out while they fit them. She came back only to be told they we're run flats.
And they fitted them.

Had I have gone there on Saturday I would have waiting for the car and no doubt they'd have asked me if I wanted them put on.
So now I've had to buy the correct run flats from the shop - £240 each. She's had to leave the car there all day as they don't carry them in stock.

:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Has any one had an issue with the metal valve covers, the shop said they prefer not to fit them as they seize?

Got all 4 of mine (staggered setup) replaced last week at BMW (despite them originally saying they wouldn't unless you buy the tyres from them)

What a difference new tyres with balancing has made to the ride. -Just a shame our dual carriageways and motorways are full of dangerously raised cats-eyes whenever a stretch of road is re-surfaced (I've had no end of run-ins with the highways agency over this, but that's another story  ::)

Had a lengthy chat with the BMW Tyre chap and he was recommending a KDS check (£169) which I said I'd leave till I'd tried the new tyres out. The new tyres have sorted the steering wheel shudder at 50mph, but the car still pulls to the left. -I did ask them to have a look at this, but they reckon it was the camber of the road....so I guess i'll have to get back in touch with the highways agency to re-lay all their roads again  :))
