Well, where would you draw the line between what is M and what isn't? Its not like in previous years where the full M cars had their own engines; now they simply adapt series engines to higher power outputs (4.4 and 3.0). For example, the upcoming "full M" M2 will allegedly share the exact same engine set up as the M Performance X4 M40i.

I'd personally say that if the M division truly had some engineering input into the car (e.g. on my car I have the M servotronic steering, I have a two stage coolant system which from the M5, etc.) then it deserves a mention of M somewhere.

Besides, theres nothing really new about M-performance models: M535 (E28), M635csi...

The problem I have with M sport is, other than say the suspension system being stiffer, its all cosmetic with no real M input (i'm sure there might be exceptions on some models, but I'm speaking generally here) - but the entire car is littered with badges somehow suggesting it had a lot of input from M.
Well they don't have frigging Diesel engines for starters!!!
They do now
Which has just ruined the brand!
Your opinion is not a fact. I disagree but I do see how the old (such as you lol) skool fans get up in arms.  :)
My guess is that selling a "M Sport package" has actually been quite profitable for BMW, but now the "///M" badge means less as it's stuck on every other car that rolls off the production line.

I can't see what was wrong with just SE and Sport as it used to be.
The badge works because people want a piece of what they can't have...ultimately it's not worth getting your knickers in a twist over is it.  :xmaskiss:
I think this is basically it.

I bet a large proportion of 5 series owners wish that their car was an M5 - so the M Sport package would get them a lot closer to their dream (especially with the wheel styling and bodykit, it's not aesthetically a million miles off a true M5).

My hubby would not buy himself the M3 we test drove as he knew I'd nick it, so the MSport was his attempt at compromise lol  :P

As was my wife's purchase of the 330Cd MSport vert we have.  Same 6-cyl engine note-ish and the same torque as the M3 (well up to about 3000rpm) but none of the service bills.

After all, the M3 basically uses the same base engine as the "normal" 3.0 litre petrol, so I wouldn't imagine it to be too different.

...apart from the extra fake noise inside the M3's cabin due to Active Sound Design  ;)

{Also, whilst on the topic, the M50d versions of X5 and X6 have active sound design, and I'm sure the full M versions do too. Its on the part list break down on BMW ASAP Parts system (and you can hear it inside the cabin too, which doesn't get louder when you put the window down!)}

I've had an M3 CS and an e60 530d M sport amongst numerous m sport spec'd BMW's between wifey and I,  including a white f20 m sport 1 series etc and it really doesn't bother me either way if a car has the badge or not! Its how it drives is what is most important to me, don't care what others think.

I think this whole debate quite often boils down to wanting to impress others! with fear of a genuine M model car "status"getting diluted amongst Joe public by M spec'd cars! when truth is, the only people who are going to be the slightest bit interested and in the know, are car enthusiasts anyway, who will spot a true M3, M5 etc a mile away! who cares if Mrs Jones at 42 thinks an msport 318d is an M3? not I.

so I wouldn't worry personally about M badges, infact I like em!!

just no, maybe same torque but the e46 m3 is a noise to itself and not at all like a tractor engine
