Performance engine? Please... Its standard engine used in 5er,7er,x5. Nothing special about it. E70 4.8i its not performance car and its using same engine. If you happy about oil consumption its fine but don't tell me it's normal cause it's not. I did few n62,n42,n46 so i know what oil usage is...

Opinions differ. And I think you're wrong about oil usage, it is perfectly normal, its stupid to think that oil is NOT used at all in any amount, in any engine, between services. And the E53 4.8is WAS the "performance" model of the range at the time, it was intended to be the M- version of the X5 albeit that didn't happen. However you look at it, in a normal road driving environment the 4.8is IS a performance engine.
I also know what oil usage is as do many, many other people , you don't have exclusive powers in that regard- and oil usage in a 4.8is is a perfectly normal thing.

That's completely normal on a diesel. It takes one it two turns extra to get all 6 cylinders firing completely in cold weather so you get a bit of smoke even with all the plugs working.
The only BMW diesel I have had that doesn't is my X6 which is on a different emissions approval (EU5).

Its stupid to think 1l/600 its normal no matter how you look at it. Your car is burning oil, end off. I never said engine is not using oil. I said you dont need to top up. Normal is 1l/10.000. But if you think 4.8 is performance engine, mine 4.4i is too, its the same engine after all and its not burning oil.

Size does not = performance! The 4.4 was at that time the 'standard ' V8 engine which was then 'played with' to produce the 4.8 version with the extra 40bhp - upped from the 4.6 whereas the 4.4 stayed pretty much as was.
Even the 3.0d in the facelift version has more torque than the 4.4...

4.4i(320bhp) face lift + 4.8is(360bhp) same engine design. Diff power down to bigger bore. Diff mapping. Thats all.

.........and that's what makes one a 'performance' engine and the other not. But each to their own.

Why would it not be?
What makes you say the 4.8l V8 is not a performance engine?
What makes a performance engine just that?
The difference in power between the 4.8 V8 (360hp) and the E39 M5 4.9 V8 (400hp) is the same bhp increase from the 4.4 to the 4.8 so does that mean it is not a performance engine?

Children. This is tittle tattle. Ive had an RX8 which used far less oil than an e46 325i tourer I had aswell at the time.
And I am disappointed in any engine when excessive oil is used and I constantly have to top up. I had an e46 M3 which never needed topping up for oil! superb car and engine!
Regarding 1 litre per 600 miles being normal, I too think that is way to excessive, per 1000 miles ( still not good ) in my eyes but better.
At end of day everybody lighten up, its not a witch hunt.
