Freezing up here for weeks already and had a blizzard yesterday ( Friday ) afternoon which melted a bit and then froze solid just as I was replacing a torn wiper blade and clearing a blocked washer nozzle on one of the cars outside .
Got some Vredestein wintrac 4 xtreme on the X5 , not sure what to make of them as yet but generally OK on the handling and a bit squidgy on the ride over bumps .
Got some Bridgestone blizzak lm22 on the X3 last year . Very loud tyres as soon as I reached 20 mph and just get louder with increased speed . Rough feedback .A reasonably good winter tyre but way overpriced .  Less grip in all conditions than the Avon Ranger Ice they replaced . Avons feel very linear , more like on rail tracks than any winter tyres I have tried . Will stay with Avon in future , Great value for money .

Winter wheels

Post by Chief1409 » Sat Oct 27, 2012 9:48 pm

All,

Looking for some help please. Going to get some winter wheels and the options I've got are the following:

Style 177 18" wheels
Style 177 19" wheels
Style 209 18" wheels
Style 211 19" wheels

Anyone got any pictures of any of the above options fitted to an E70 MSport?

Currently have 20" style 227 wheels and worried the 18"s might look a bit lost in comparison but also not sure how good the 19"s will actually be in the snow.

Any thoughts?

Try looking at somewhere like Alloywheelsdirect dot net.  Not perfect, but you'll get a clue at least.

Style 211 on 19" as an example.

Style 209 on 18's do look a little 'lost' though..... ;)

I have style 168 19" for Winter (and my avatar) and 20" Style 214 for Summer on the X6.  The 'OEM set' is 19" on mine, and may well be on yours too.

I have the 18in cross spoke style 177s. Worked brilliantly in very heavy snow in Swiss Alps last year (Continental winter contact tyres), and i think they're good looking wheels. The 19s would be slightly better looking, but smaller narrower wheels are better in wintry conditions so depends on what your priorities are.  FYI my summer wheels are 19s as they offer a more comfortable ride than 20s.

There's plenty on winter tyres under CondorX5's post under the General Discussion forum.

Fortunately it appears the M50d has same sized hubs as the 40d so I will be donning my winter wheels/tyres straight away after the short drive home when she arrives next month

So far I think you've got an audience of one on M50d advice. But no doubt before long we'll have a few more lucky bug*ers showing up!  :))

I've got these on my E70 M sport. They look OK. The back wheels look a little lost as they are only 255 vs 315. Slightly softer over the bumps. The wheel/tyre diameter is about the same as the 20" wheels.
