Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
Re: Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
Cheers Ian, have actually bought a different one, so likley be a duff call and it not work lol. Went with laptop in end as figured it'd be easier to add other software in future, ie for other cars.
Here's hoping the one I bought is suitable, although was dirt cheap as well used, so not much to lose really. Had das or dis or inpa bmw stuff on it, so took a punt!
Cheers

Re: Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
So, turbo back off now, fingers crossed he holds up to replacing or refunding.
Also changed the diesel filter, what a pants job. Followed a YouTube video suggestion of removing the 6 rivets rather than dropping the whole 18 bolt tray thing. Have replaced them with bolts, so far easier to do in future. Glad the filter didn't freeze when skiing as no way I'd been able to change that filter with just travel tools lol.
Think the filter was way past its best, first bit of diesel out was yellow (normal colour) but after a little bit it went black, real black. Drove it after but didn't cure her.
Unplugged egr vac line and sealed line up, seemed to be a bit stronger, but perhaps just me as not drove it in a while. Tested the egr, seems to seal nice and tight (held petrol for 10mins without any sign of leakage through).
Unplugged maf and can't say it made a difference to driving or idel, surely that's not right? Thought perhaps it's toast, hence no change as running on default anyway, but have no maf code?
Did notice a very quiet sound though (when driving, not when Unplugged, or plugged maf or egr), sounded like a cricket type scratch air/electric type noise, but only in single bursts not double like crickets. Thought maybe a vac controller or something?
Have replaced both vac controllers (that are the same in design as each other) but noticed a 3rd vac controller or at least it has vac lines to it. It's smaller and lacks the filter box, but sits right next to the egr one, it feeds a single vac line that drops down to engine mounts, what is this for, and why need vac at engine mounts? This is the only vac line I've not changed, should I do it?
Have also replaced the map sensor in the inlet manifold, but haven't driven it to know if helped as no turbo on and I've left all the inlet manifold etc off, as have removed the glow plugs and controller. Thankfully the glow plugs came out very easily, but did give them some penetrative fluid before hand and car was warm, result!
Will get new plugs and controller, then rebuild air side, will replace the status whilst she apart and then await another turbo and then shove her back together. If all this hasn't worked, then I'm thinking it must be a hole in intercooler or its 2 main pipes or the inlet manifold itself. Tested these as best I could, so does anyone agree these are next areas given the codes she thrown? Is it worth also changing the air temp sensor as well? Given my codes, I don't see that it's air temp related, rather charge air pressure (am I understanding the 4521 code correctly?) But seems to be that and the maf that haven't been changed lol.
Know it's not an exact science but I tested the resistance of the plugs for the crack of it, results from front plug to back one (testing central core of plug to engine block near the plug) were:
1 - 1.1 ohm
2 - infinate, didn't even beep to indicate a circuit
3 - no circuit again
4 - 96 ohm
5 - 1 ohm
6 - 0.9 ohm
From these I'd guess they are meant to be in the region of 1 ohm, or perhaps not? Either way clearly some or all are well goosed lol.
What a palarva, should have just left it along and drove it till something clearly popped. >:D

Re: Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
Re Noise & No Go at speed..
I wonder... if you have had the vacuum pipe fail or drop off either side of the vacuum reservoir that lives in front of the screen wash tub....
I was swapping out knackered vacuum pipes & when I pulled this one, the exhaust note... sounded marvelously chonky & loud... and no power when you hit the big GO pedal ...
Could it possibly be this simple to fix ????

Re: Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
I wish, was the first thing I tried, before then replacing all vac lines (as I grabbed one and it broke lol). Only line not changed is the long one from third vac controller (smaller one) that drops to engine mounts, as not sure why it's even there!
Cheers though, was a good shout

Re: Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
Hummer, seems 3 of them may be OK judging by the comment in the video, that circa 1 ohm is ok. Interesting. All be changed mind, with controller, so doesn't matter but good to know. Thanks horizon.
Anyone know why vac lines go to engine mounts, I'm curious as to purpose. Can only guess it's to create a vac in the mounts and limit vibration or something like that? Think I'll change that vac line though, ass only one left lol.

So, turbo refunded, do I fit the old one (as new one didn't cure power loss) or is it possible turbo is to blame, and new one didn't work as the codes returned after rest on new turbo?
Alfa, what software do I need on laptop to read and clear codes? Any ideas how to do it, and what cable etc be great.

How much play is in the old one..... Personally if there wasn't any movement I'd be tempted to give it a whirl

Not too much to be honest, less than the new one lol.

The exhaust blades certainly weren't catching as the soot is even and no marks, but there was some white buildup around the exhaust flange thing:

Re: Possible turbo issue? Engine much louder under acceleration & less go at speed
my turbo looked the same as yours from the photo of the exhaust side, have a look at the other side, the compressor wheel on mine had bits of the blades missing and the wheel was twisted, there was hardley any slack in the bearing

the front of the compressor wheel what i can see of the photo's looks to me like it has play in the bearing the fines have a slight burring were there catching the housing, my fines looked the same as yours as per photo, but when they split the turbo it was the smaller fines inside were damaged, plus i had oil everywhere.

Have you taken your old unit to a recommended turbo repair company to get a report quote for overhauling it.
Sorry if you already have, as I'm not trawling back through all the posts, must be one of the longest ever.
