Interestingly from 2007 BMW started fitting their Incorrect Fuelling Protection System (IFPS) as standard to diesel cars. It apparently works by needing the 24mm diesel nozzle in place before a flap opens to allow the nozzle to push in. The standard 21mm petrol nozzle will not engage with two latches and therefore will not open the flap.

Unfortunately the article is a press release from BMW itself in January 2007. It does not say when each model was actually changed though. It just crows about BMW being the first manufacturer to do it as standard for the EU and US markets.
