Just picked a 2013 E70 40D on Thursday. The first 120 m'way miles at that speed showed 33-34mpg. We did a 20 mile local trip last night on country B roads and it reached 40 on the way there, 41 mpg on the return. We were taking it easy though and I certainly don't expect to see much more than early 30's on overall use once I stop resetting between journeys.

So I joined the motorway, got up to about 85MPH and reset the trip computer. I then drove at a steady(ish) 85 for the entire 30 miles.
What MPG would you expect to see?
The trip computer showed:
25.9 consumption
85.7 speed
So at a steady run, its not even getting over 26 MPG!!

Drag increases by a factor of 4 every time speed is doubled (square law) so 15 mph less does make a fair difference in MPG .... Personally I'd rather get there more quickly and suffer the poor economy when conditions permit.
I'm averaging 27 in my E53, my 530D was averaging 42 doing the same type of driving, shows the difference pushing a brick through the air makes.

We're heading to Liverpool tonight so I will again reset the trip and asses the consumption.
The issue I have is that its been remapped - so if I go complaining to the dealer then they may flag that or even over write the map
Updates to follow.

Heading off on holiday early next week to Europe for approx 3,500 miles so we'll see what it averages over that distance...
Don't think some spirited driving on Route Napoleon, Stelvio Pass, de-restricted Autobahn and the Nurburgring will help....

My 2007 E70 3.0d has averaged 30mpg over the last 9500 miles since the last service (all filters changed), including some towing at an average speed of 34.5mph. Now done 101000. Most driving is on dual and single carriageways at about 50-60 because of traffic. Interesting comments about speed - towing in Germany where caravans during the day have to be on the inside lane of 2 lane autobahns and cannot overtake , speed becomes limited to 56mph sitting behind lorries - I get 25mpg. At 70-75mph here mpg drops to 29 and is about 35-36 at 50mph.
I used to have the handbook for a pre-war MG. Printed on each page on one side was "a clean car goes better than a dirty one" and on the facing pages "speed costs money". Food for thought...

Thanks for your thoughts guys.
I think my issue is a heavy car and a heavy right foot.
I certainly won't be driving at 70MPH all the way to Liverpool to see the MPG, would sooner spend more and get there quicker.
I think my issue is expecting such a big heavy car to be fuel efficient at speed.
My old Jag XFS would return 29/30 MPG at 100 MPH all day long.
The X5 (being the size of a house) simply can't get near that consumption.
As for a clean car going better than a dirty one - mine is cleaned every Friday :-[

Ive a 08 plate 3.0Sd.
And ive found I get around the 26-28mpg on the average town comute .
If I drive steady on the M way, then I can get up to 32mpg, BUT that's driving at 70mph ish, on cruise for around 100 miles...
If I up the cruise to 80 or above then the mpg drops to around 26-28...
If im towing then it drops to around the 23-25 mark...
The poor mpg figures,, can sometimes be associated to the main and/or the egr stats being faulty. Ie reading low..
Therefore making the engine think its not hot enough and pumping in more fuel....
I know my car doesn't do as well on juice in the winter either...

The 35d for some reason seemed to do worse generally for fuel consumption.

Is that because its a 6 speed gearbox rather than the 8 speed in the later cars.?

I've had my 2011 40d M Sport few a couple of weeks and I love it.
Coming from an E53 X5 I'm loving the higher MPG I'm getting.
I travel from Nottingham to Birmingham Monday to Friday and have been getting 33 to 37 mpg average on my motorway commute and about 30 in the city.

I average 30 mpg with a range of 24 mpg while towing a large caravan, 25 mpg around town and up to 34 mpg on long runs. I tend to travel at the speed limit +10 mph. For the size of the car and what it can do when asked, the average of 30 mpg for me is ok, but like most would liked to have seen a little more mpg from it.

Hi i have had an X5 4D M sport for two years ( 17,000 miles ) and 26 to 34 mpg is my typical mpg, but i find lifting off a bit in the cruise at say 75 -85 mph makes 3 to 4 mpg difference, cruise at 65 mph and you can get 34 mpg. Its my third X5 , the most economical was the 3 D 2006, which did 34 -36mpg. my last 7 seater struggled at 28 -30mpg due i guess to the extra weight.
