The X5 is an impressive looking car with road presence, and you feel good driving it. The 3.0d might feel a bit sluggish in comparison. Also the X5 is a little hard to park in tight spaces,..but it is a big 4x4, reverse camera really helps with parking. You do get used to the size however.

I went the other way from a E53 4.8is to a E61 520d and engine aside the 5 series in my opinion for more enjoyable to drive it felt more nimble had more direct steering and you didn't feel the weight like you did in the X5 in corners and under braking.
I would buy another X5 in a shot though as I don't think I have owned any other car that had the feel good factor like that did.

Think the x5 definitely has road presence and be more special
But my 535d touring IMO is still a looker and goes well with the family on board
Reality hit with if px'ing cost would be about £8-10k just to get a similar age and spec x5 to my e61 which doesn't make any sense to me then

I have a X5 30d M Sport (sport suspension deleted). I bought it new in November 2012 after having an E61 520d for 3 years. I have to admit that the E61 was a beautiful car and a pleasure to drive and ride in. My wife regrets the change but I wanted a 4wd car after a series of bad winters up here in NE Scotland. If they did the 5 series touring with X-Drive in the UK I would have bought one of those but with a bigger engine.. Having said that, I love the X5 and intend to keep it for some time. Would I buy another? Yes, unless they intro the 5 touring with X-drive into the UK, then I would have a dilema.

I have had winter tyres on my BMWs every winter since 1999. That includes 2 x 3 series saloons, 5 series saloon and touring and now X5. I agree; a transformation. However, sill not as comforting as 4x4 with winter tyres. No fear!

535dboy makes good sense. He has had both the cars I currently have, 535d and 3.0sd x5. The 535d I love. 146k miles now and still wonderful. The x5 rides appallingly and is forever giving me problems. Really thinking it may have to go whereas I can't bring myself to part with the 535d.
When you say your X5's rides appallingly I am guessing you still have them crappy run flat tyres on it?

Nope. 19s and non run flats. The 535d ride is better on 30 profile rears! I tried falcons which I think maybe still quite a stiff side wall but still an improvement over rfts. Will try either those Michelins you recommended or maybe some contis next if I keep it long enough.
When I read some reviews on the Falken 453's some people did say there cars had a harder ride when they had them fitted.
I went for the Michelin latitude sport 3 because as its been designed as a road tyre its had some of the off road 4x4 stiffness taken out.
I would say the ride on our X5 is now as good or pretty near our E91 325d, that had 18" Michelin pilot sport 3 non run flats fitted.
