Hi there thanks for that I already own one and was just wondering what people are getting in real life scenario as mine seems rather low. 15/16 round town 25 on a run

Even "on a run" it will depend on driving style, congestion and other factors (such as tyre pressures etc) but I can go from the south coast via motorway to Scotland and get 39-41 mph.

Surely not on a pre face lift ? Obviously all those factors are considered. I'm doing a continuous 60miles at 75mph and won't go above 28mpg.

Done software update on engine and gearbox today so we will see it had never been updated from 2002. Obviously I will need to reinstate the map. Doing less if anything 27.4 but the map is off atm so not a fair test. We will see.

02 diesel sport auto, 19" wheels 24mpg round the doors, 29 on a run. Seems to get better mpg cruising at 80 than at 65 for some reason. When the wheels were being refurbed and they were having problems getting them done we had 24" wheels loan wheels on, 21mpg verified on brimming the tank and odo readings and rode even worse than our previous e60 with 19"run flats. Why do people bother? It looks stupid and ruins the car.
Pretty disappointing for a diesel, my next suv will be on lpg.

I am not a technician but comment as follows....

Driving style and journey type aside - There are a number of factors that can affect mpg.

Personally before even looking at maps and software of engine and or box I would want to do all I could to satisfy myself car was otherwise in good health...glow plugs, injectors, sensors, maf, filters breather, egr valve etc. I would also want to make sure the manifold was okay and turbo was behaving.

If all those things were fine, no fault codes showing I would then ensure the engine and box were running appropriate/desired map and firmware.

Maybe consider a terraclean treatment too :)

For purposes of comparing mpg it may be most beneficial to compare like for like. The engine and gearboxes on 3.0d pre and post facelift aren't the same

As driving styles vary so much I personally think that follk should try to use one benchmark when comparing identical cars such as.....cruise at 60 mph in top gear, on straight and level with 30 min warmed engine. Otherwise there are too many variables and figures can be taken out of context.
