Eek!

Spent a few hours changing the E46 ones for PMW blanks this morning.  Job made a little more challenging because the run out models have electric flap control systems which no one else mentions in any if the 'how to' guides I found.  The plug to the control can only be got at if you part lift the inlet manifold.

Anyway it's done now and runs OK.

OK guys, so bought the X3 (tonight) and one of the first jobs I'm looking at are these feared Swirl Flaps. Reading this, I would rather get rid of and use Blanking plates, esp as 99.9% of forums and guys I've spoken to have said performance is the same. Get rid of rather than risk destroying an engine. Any of you recommend a good thorough "How to guide/ video"? Also, would a £5. Ebay blanking plate work... an recommendations? Thanks.

I found guides on YouTube for the 3series with the M57 engine (3.0D).

Blanking plates came from PMW.

Thanks Richard. I've not heard of them before, so guessing as you had them... they had to be quality!

Solidly machined from Alli billet and around £34 for a set of 6.

Perfect fit too.  Being 'domestic Control's' car, it had to be right..... :'(

I used these on mine:

Mine needed the 22mm flaps but ordered both as I was unsure which ones were needed. I then returned the unused set.

And used this guide as a basic start but read a lot on line first:
