I think we need to start being more methodical in how we help - believe me I've shared this very frustration with my old X5.
Just to start though, can you confirm that you've deleted all previously paired phones and deleted all/most SMS messages from your phone and confirmed your phone is compatible with the BMW implementation of bluetooth? After that, exactly what methods to pair have you tried - there are several that seem to have worked for different forum members. Happy to scan and send you the official BMW pairing intructions for an old Nokia 6310i, though whether it's the same for your particular phone is another matter

Hi Peter,

My phone is a Nokia 5800, not sure ifts compatible . I have deleted all messages. I cant delete any phones which might be o the system because nothing happens when i try. When i push the button in the centre console nothing happens, no messages on the screen at all. When i choose the Telephone option on the menue screen there are 3 options one is 'Activate Phone' in white but can not be highlighted and another 2 options on the display which can be highlihted, these are 'emergency calls' and a phone symbol.

I have pushed the button in the centre armrest for 3,5,10 and even 20 seconds then turn on the ignition to position 1 and tried position 2, no messages and no LED lights, i have then searched for bluetooth devices on the phone and nothing is found.

I have pressed the buttons on the steering wheel instead of the one in the armrest and tried the above, and nothing! The only thing i can think now is that there is some wire/s somewhere not connected or broken!

Its asif the bluetooth system doesnt exist in the car, but now i've seen the module in the boot i know it has!!

I'm very frustrated!!

Thanks for all your help,

Roy.

Sorry that this one is simplistic but are all the leads plugged into the bluetooth module and is the appropriate fuse ok?
I had the nokia cradle for my old 6310i fitted by the dealer and that turned out to be faulty which didn't help - sounds like others have had similar issues with pinched cables etc. Not too sure about this part as the bluetooth thing is all about being wireless.
The issue of the 'activate phone' option being greyed out suggests that there is a fundamental thing we are missing (hence thinking about the power supplies)
Hi all,

I am still trying to pair my mobile with the car!! I have tried everything on this forum and other forums but no luck. I push the button in the arm rest and go through the instructions but nothing!

'Activate Phone' is showing on the screen even before i press any buttons, and i cant get any led lights to come on the top right of the display! I am starting to think that i dont have bluetooth in the car . The car is a 2005 3.0d sport.

I have even pulled out the cradle in the armrest just in case there are any loose connections, but it looked ok!

How would i know if i have bluetooth? I have had a look in the rear of the car and can see the multichanger and sat nav dvd above it. Above that theres a thinish stainless steel box with wires coming out of it. Below the cd changer theres another unit on its side in a plastic casing, but i cant see what this is.

Can anyone help me? Its starting to do my head in now!

Many thanks,

Roy.
I had exactly the same problem last year and did post a fix on the old site. I too was not getting any led`s
on the top right of the display and could not go through the pairing process, found this very strange as it worked perfectly
in my approx 2 years of ownership at the time.

Mine turned out to be the cradle in the armrest, i swapped the cradle from my E46 330ci and i got
the led`s back and it went through the pairing process. So i remember thinking to myself the cradle out of my X5 is broken anyway so
lets open it up and see what`s going on inside, iirc i used a T10 torx to open the cradle and found the 2 cables that plug
into the cars wiring harness go to 1 white coloured plug connector inside the cradle which had worked itself loose and was not connected
to the cradle , i reconnected this white plug to the cradle, put the cradle back together and has been working fine since without any issues.

Now i know you mentioned in your first post you pulled the cradle out of the armrest to check for any loose connections but did you
undo the 4 torx screws holding the cradle together to check the connection inside the cradle ?

Worked for me , hope it works for you .

Good luck.

I don't think it has anything to do with the phone - you can't even get it into pairing mode, so the phone model is actually irrelevant!! Likewise, the cradle should be of no importance in the pairing issue - it is of course important when it comes to charging the phone correctly, but I can't see how it would prevent the module going into pairing mode. You don't theoretically need a cradle for the bluetooth kit to operate at all - the phone can be in your pocket or in the boot or wherever - and still be paired up. Its the getting into pairing mode which I have found to be the problem - my bluetooth module is being replaced under warranty tomorrow. I can eventually get mine into pairing mode after a lot of faffing around, sometimes hours. Can't be right. I think your Bluetooth module must be faulty, I'm afraid......

@ condorx5

I cannot understand why you would think the cradle is of no importance when it comes to pairing phones, how else would you be able to
pair bluetooth compatible phones, that button you push for a few seconds before you turn the key to position 1 is connected to the cradle . I believe
you are talking about the snap in adapters which you correctly mentioned are only for charging phones and have no relevance to bluetooth pairing. A cradle
and a snap in adapter are 2 different parts .

x man,

Thanksforyour replies. Yes I have taken the cradle out from within the armrest by pushing in 2 credit cards into the sides and lifting it up. The wires looked ok and were going into it. So you mention torx screws, are these to take the cradle itself apart? And were the cables damaged inside the cradle i take it then? As you say if the button on the cradle doesnt work then the pairing process wont happen?
I will check tomorrow!
Many thanks mate,
Roy.

Yes the 4 torx screws are indeed to take the cradle apart. The cables going into the cradle were not damaged on mine and should not
be damaged on yours either, both cables go into 1 small white connector which hopefully on yours has worked itself loose and is disconnected
from the circuit board inside the cradle.

Be very careful when seperating the cradle as there are small parts inside that you do not want to lose or not know were they go if they should fall out.
Once seperated you will see the white connector if it is loose or disconnected just push it back in, put the cradle back together and refit to your car.
This had me scratching my head for a number of weeks before i found this fault . If this resolve`s your bluetooth issue maybe you can take a picture
of the culprit and post it on here.

I always like to eliminate the cheapest options first when fault finding ,as many of us are aware parts on our cars can cost a small fortune
and not everyone has got a warranty .

Good luck buddy and keep us informed.

Check the relevant fuses for the telephone option in the front and rear fuse boxes and did you put the big
connector on the bluetooth module in the boot back on properly ?

xman,

It was the fuse in the boot!! Many thanks mate!

The LED's flash and 'BLUETHOOTH PAIRING' comes up,when i try to connect it asks for a passkey and I put that in and it says 'Pairing succeeded', on the phone it goes on to ask 'Automatically connect.....' then i press yes. It then asks 'connect now?' i push yes and it says ' failed to connect, I have pushed no to this and its still the same!

I'm getting there slowly, a million miles closer now!

Am i doing something somewhere wrong?

Roy.

I have followed a link on the How To and have turned off the ignition and its ok now, but when i make a call and end it the radio/cd will not come back on until i dissconnect the phone!
Surely this isnt right? In my Touareg the music came back on after terminating the call!

Any tips??
