Anything I should do as a new owner?
Re: Anything I should do as a new owner?
88* is 88* whether in a petrol car, diesel car or the central heating at home mate.
If the thermostat is set to open at 88 and the car is meant to run 90* then that's what it should do no matter what engine or outside temp.
If it's only 10 degrees outside and by the thermostat opening to let the water through the rad it gets too cold then the stat shuts to let the water heat up more.
When I took the egr stat out it was stuck open. Put a new one in and it now sits at 90 all the time.
So definately needed doing.
Running 20* cooler IS too cold.
As I said earlier, my cossie is on cold start until 75* and the stat opens at 88 like the X5. I've actually fitted an 82* stat to that and it's too cold so I'm going back to a std 88!

Sounds like you know your way around an engine. I'd have no idea temps mean things like that. Would that mean that if I buy mine it could have things wrong but would not show on the dash. So I'd be driving around Happy not knowing stuff is broken. That's a bit crappy. How do you do the extra checks on the computer?

That is true but most garages should pick up stuff like that in a service. Although checking running temps isn't something most would do unless looking for a direct fault.

Hi Stu. Are you getting better mpg now that youve changed the egr stat? Was it easy and how do you go about it?
Im thinking i need to plug the little obd thingy in and link it to my phone again and see what engine temp i am getting.
For what its worth and i know mines the twin turbo by i average about 19mpg driving round london and the highest ive seen so far is 27mpg on a decent run

Re: Anything I should do as a new owner?
Our 3.0d does around 20-25mpg round town and the best I have had on a motorway run is 37mpg so far.
I changed both stats when we got the car and gained a couple of mpg as it now runs at about 90, also the car wont do a dpf regen until the temps are around 70deg and over.
The other common fault with the diesels is the glow plug control module fails and not all code readers pick up on it, had one go down on our 07 325d and also our 57 X5 3.0d needs a new one so very common.

Well I can't say the mpg has improved but I'm not finished trying to improve it yet though.
It's going in for software updates next week and maybe a couple of other things.
I've also ordered some extra strong dpf cleaner. Doubt it will do much though.
Changing the egr thermostat was a piece of cake. There's 1 hose and 2 bolts and it's sat on top of the engine.
It definately needed doing, the old one was stuck open and with the new one on it warms up quicker and sits at 90* all the time now. It's gained a couple of mpg but not enough to write about.

Look in the 'Engine' section and the 'Intake Manifold.......' Or just look at this linky.
Item 1 includes the dreaded words 'including flap control'. These are the evil devices! All the diesels have them, even the very latest. Only the E53 escaped, but that being said they are supposed to be of a different design and I have not seen a reference to recent failures.

[/quote]The de-tuned 197hp 3L diesel in the E90 325d and E60 525d also escaped swirl flaps.
