V8 mate. Petrol is cheaper, my 4.6 will do 25mpg driving really steady 20mpg just normal driving (if that is an issue). All the toys, better styling, the noise and its a V8!! You can get lower mileage ones for similar price to the blue one. Mines done 83K and I'll be putting it up for 7,500

whatever you buy i would go 4.8is (facelift) or 3.0d (facelift) having owned a pre and a facelift the latter wins ever time for me, so many of the crap bits have been rectified by then.

the 4.8 would be my choice of a petrol x5 as the running costs compared to the 30i or 4.4i or 4.6is will be the same but the car has more power
