There are no good cars in these sectors whatever the badge

Am happy that lotus is still worth c£27.5k despite paying £40k for it new 5.5 years ago

Quite right, they all lose money.  The Premium brands quote % residuals, as the actual figure in £ lost would scare buyers off.  Very few cars hold anything near a decent residual and your Lotus is a good example.  I brought a three year old Fiat panda as a commuting car in 2008, for £4k. Some five years later it's still worth £1500-2000.  Shit car, but chip as chips....well possibly even cheaper than chips these days.

My X6 was £39k and 20 months old when I got it a year ago.  The previous owner paid £63k.  I would be lucky to get £25-28k today as a trade in.
